The ED has arrested controversial lawyer Rohit Tandon here in connection with a money laundering probe in a case of seizure of Rs 13.6 crore after police raided a law firm premises as part of an anti-black money operation post demonetisation.
He was placed under arrest late last night under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and will be produced in a court for further custody.
Tandon was allegedly instrumental in the illegal conversion of demonetised currency worth about Rs 60 crore in purported connivance with Kolkata-based businessman Paras Mal Lodha and arrested Kotak Bank manager in Delhi Ashish Kumar.
Tandon’s case pertains to an operation of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch and the Income Tax department earlier this month when the agencies had seized Rs 13.6 crore, of which Rs 2.6 crore was in new currency, allegedly from a law firm here that he is associated with.
The ED had booked a PMLA case against him based on the police FIR.
The lawyer was earlier separately searched by the tax department where it was said that he declared undisclosed income worth over Rs 125 crore to the taxman.

A Delhi Police head constable has been suspended for allegedly helping women pickpockets after CCTV footage showed him taking something from the accused at Chawri Bazar Metro station.
The accused were arrested after a complaint by a US based woman who had charged them of stealing her valuables while travelling to Gurgaon in the Metro on December 9.
The head constable who purportedly appeared in the CCTV footage has been suspended for his suspected behaviour.
Further investigation in the case is underway
The CISF manning the Chawri Bazar Metro station later scanned the CCTV footage in which the accused women were seen with the constable and also taking some unidentified object from them.

Former top IAS officer Baijal Is 21st LG Of Delhi
Career bureaucrat Anil Baijal was today appointed as the new Lt Governor of Delhi, a post which has fallen vacant after sudden resignation of Najeeb Jung.
70-year-old Baijal, a 1969 batch IAS officer, had served as Union Home Secretary under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government besides holding key positions in other ministries.
The President accepted the resignation of Jung and also ordered for appointment of Baijal, who will be the 21st Lt Governor of the national capital.
Baijal had retired from service in 2006 as Secretary, Urban Development Ministry. He is a former vice chairman of Delhi Development Authority.
Baijal was actively associated with the designing and roll-out of Rs 60,000 crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched by the Manmohan Singh government.
The former bureaucrat was also on the executive council of the think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation, several of whose former members have been appointed to senior positions by the Modi government including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Jung had submitted his resignation on December 22, ending a nearly three-and-half-year-long eventful tenure, mostly marked by bitter confrontation with AAP government

Airport Employees will have to furnish their Aadhaar number to obtain the mandatory Airport Entry Passes (AEPs) used for entry and exit.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the mandated force for civil airports, will implement the measure from January 1 after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued an order in this regard on its request.
CISF Director General O P Singh said.”From January 1, all AEPs will be made using the Aadhaar number of the individual working or employed at the airport.
A committee constituted in this regard has mandated that these passes will only be made using the Aadhaar number.
“For the old existing passes, the validity has been extended till March 31,”
The Force has also sought creation of a AEP database so that red flags can be raised against defaulters or those who have been caught in wrongdoing,
Each AEP is checked by CISF security personnel during entry and exit at airports.
The force at present guards 59 civil airports in the country.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today continued his attacked on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetisation, accusing him of practising politics of “fear and anger” and exhorted partymen to defeat his ideology.
“On November 8, Modiji said he is performing a ‘yagya’ against corruption and black money. In every yagya someone’s sacrifice is done and every yagya is done to benefit someone.
“The demonetisation ‘yagya’ is for 50 families of the country’s 1 per cent super rich. It is the poor, farmers, labourers, middle class and small shopkeepers who are being sacrificed in this ‘yagya’. There has been tremendous pain caused by it,” he said presiding over Congress Party’s 132nd Foundation Day celebrations,
The Congress will stand with people, farmers, labourers, middle-class and small shopkeepers and with the country and help them, he said, exhorting Congressmen to reach out to those “pained” by demonetisation and fight and defeat the ideology of Modi and RSS that spreads “fear and hatred”.
Accusing Modi for hurting financial independence of people of this country, he asked on what basis limits of Rs 24,000 were imposed on withdrawal.
Filling in for his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi who is not keeping well, Rahul for the first time today unfurled the Tricolour at the party headquarters to mark the Congress Foundation Day.
He addressed a gathering of top party leaders including all members of the Congress Working Committee, indicating his slow but consistent march towards elevation as Congress chief.
Rahul used the occasion to trace the party’s history of sacrifices and struggles to say Congress was synonymous with acceptance of the other.
He said, “Modi government is today tearing apart the fabric of our country. Modiji’s policies are creating a tremendous fear psychosis among people. Modiji is trying to convert this fear and pain into hatred.
Demonetisation is an example of this.

Tainted former IOA President Abhay Singh Chautala today lashed out at Vijay Goel for criticising his appointment as Life President of the national Olympic body, saying the Sports Minister should first focus on his job as he has failed to fulfil his responsibilities.
Sports Minister Goel yesterday criticised the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for making the tainted duo of Suresh Kalmadi and Chautala Life Presidents, saying it was “totally unacceptable” as both of them were facing serious criminal and corruption charges.
Kalmadi and Chautala were made Life Presidents by the IOA at its Annual General Meeting in Chennai yesterday.
“I was surprised by the reaction of Sports Minister Vijay Goel. He was claiming that there are criminal and corruption cases against me. The case against me is not a criminal case, it is a political case,” a livid Chautala said.
“Mr Goel has failed in his responsibility as a Sports Minister. I would advise him to fulfil his responsibility as Sports Minister because if he does that, our medal count will increase manifold and he will get credit for that. Instead of getting into a controversy without knowing full facts, he should focus on his job,” Chautala added.
Vijay Kalmadi served as IOA President from 1996 to 2011 and was jailed for 10 months for his involvement in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games corruption scandal but was later released on bail.
Chautala served as the President of IOA from December 2012 to February 2014 when the national Olympic body was suspended by the International Olympic Committee for fielding charge-sheeted candidates at the elections. His election as IOA chief was annulled by the IOC

Aviation regulator DGCA has derostered an air traffic controller (ATC) for the incident in which two fully-loaded passenger aircraft came face-to-face on the taxiway at the Delhi airport today.
“The ATC who cleared the landing of IndiGo flight as well as allowed the SpiceJet aircraft, for Hyderabad, to leave the holding area for refuelling has been taken off the duty till the probe is completed,”
However, providentially a disaster was averted after commanders of both the planes alerted the air traffic control and switched off their engines.
Meanwhile, sources also alleged that the delay in arrival of the Follow-Me-Jeep, operated by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), was also a contributing factor in the incident.

161 people on board a Mumbai-bound Jet Airways aircraft today had a miraculous escape when it skidded off the runway, made an abrupt about turn and its nose touched the soft land while taxiing for take off early today in Goa airport, leaving 15 passengers injured.
There were 154 passengers and seven crew members onboard when the Boeing 737 aircraft turned a full 360 degree on the runaway and veered towards the soft land and in the process damaging the landing gear around 5 AM.
The nose cone was virtually on the grass abutting the runway, indicating the seriousness of the accident that could have been disastrous.
Seven of the injured have been discharged from the hospital after being provided medical aid and the airline’s flight operations to and from Goa have resumed,
Prima facie the runway accident appears to be a pilot’s fault.
The DGCA has withdrawn the flying privileges of the two pilots, including the Commander,

इससे पूर्व भारतीय जनता पार्टी के उत्तर प्रदेश अध्यक्ष केशव प्रसाद मौर्य ने आज कहा कि प्रदेश की गरीब जनता मायावती से बसपा के खातों में आई करोडों रूपये की धनराशि पर सवाल खड़ा कर रही है।
मौर्य के अनुसार , बसपा के खातों में नोटबन्दी के तुरन्त बाद 10 नवम्बर के बाद जमा हुई बडी धनराशि एक बडा सवाल है। मायावती बसपा के खातों में आये 104 करोड़ रूपये का हिसाब दें।’’ उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘आज उत्तर प्रदेश की गरीब जनता मायावती से बसपा के खातों में आई अरबों से अधिक धनराशि पर सवाल खड़ा कर रही है। प्रदेश की गरीब जनता और अनुसूचित जाति वर्ग के लोग मायावती से पार्टी खाते में नोटबंदी के बाद आये एक अरब रूपये से भी अधिक की धनराशि पर प्रश्न कर रहे हैं।’’ मौर्य ने कहा कि जनता जर्नादन को बाबा साहब भीमराव अम्बडेकर के सपने दिखाकर उनके वोटों का व्यापार कर यह अरबों की राशि एकत्रित की गयी, जिसका हिसाब उ प्र की गरीब जनता पूछ रही है।
भाजपा अध्यक्ष ने कहा अब लोगों को नोटबन्दी के बाद मायावती की अनर्गल बयानबाजी का सच पता चल रहा है। उनकी परेशानी का असली कारण वोटों के व्यापार से एकत्रित कालाधन है
