भारतीयों का कनक [स्वर्ण][गोल्ड]प्रेम आज कल अन्तराष्ट्रीय चर्चा का विषय बना हुआ है|
देश में तो सोने के आभूषणों की लूट चल ही रही है अब ब्रिटेन में लीसेस्टर के ईस्ट मिडलैंड्स शहर की पुलिस ने भारतीय मूल की महिलाओं को अपने स्वर्ण आभूषण छिपा कर रखने की सलाह दी है।
महिलाओं को घर से बाहर चलते समय अपने सोने के आभूषणों को कपड़ों या किसी स्कार्फ से ढंक कर रखने की सलाह दी जा रही है|
यहाँ भारतीय समुदाय के लोग काफी बड़ी संख्या में रहते हैं। भारतीयों के स्वामित्व वाली आभूषण की दुकानों में हाल के दिनों में लूटपाट की घटनाओं में अप्रत्याशित वृद्धि हुई है।
विशेषतौर पर लिटिल इंडिया कहे जाने वाले इलाके बेलग्रेव रोड पर झपटमारी की घटनाएं काफी हो रही हैं।
कतार से आभूषणों की दुकानें होने के कारण बेलग्रेव रोड को ‘गोल्डन माइल’ भी कहा जाता है।
इससे पूर्व चीन के मीडिया ने भारत में सोने के प्रेम का मज़ाक उड़ाया था |चीन में कहा जा रहा है कि भारत में एक भिखारिन छोटी लड़की भी कानों में सोने के कुंडल पहनती है|पुरुषों में भी विभिन्न सोने के आभूषण पहनने का चलन है|
