Former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh has slammed the government over freezing of dearness allowance, asserting that it was not necessary at this stage to impose hardships on government servants and armed forces personnel.
The finance ministry on Thursday froze inflation-linked allowance for 50 lakh central government employees and 61 lakh pensioners till June 2021 due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, DA and dearness relief (DR) at current rates will continue to be paid,
Former Union minister Manish Tewari said the first thing the government should have done before cutting allowances, salaries, etc. was to set up an expenditure rationalisation commission.

प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेन्द्र मोदी की अध्यक्षता में केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने आज मूल्य-वृद्धि की क्षति-पूर्ति के लिए, मूल वेतन/पेंशन के 12 प्रतिशत की मौजूदा दर में 5 प्रतिशत की वृद्धि करते हुए 1 जुलाई, 2019 से केंद्र सरकार के कर्मचारियों के लिए महंगाई भत्ते (डीए) और पेंशनभोगियों के लिए महंगाई राहत के लिए अतिरिक्त धनराशि जारी करने हेतु अपनी मंजूरी दे दी है। यह वृद्धि स्वीकृत फार्मूले के अनुसार की गई है, जो सातवें केंद्रीय वेतन आयोग की सिफारिशों पर आधारित है।
पेंशनभोगियों के लिए महंगाई राहत के कारण प्रतिवर्ष 7319.15 करोड़ रूपये और मौजूदा वित्त में 4870 करोड़ रूपये का अतिरिक्त बोझ पड़ने का अनुमान है।

The Punjab government today hiked the dearness allowance (DA) of its employees and pensioners by seven per cent, in a bid to woo the voters right ahead of crucial state Assembly polls in 2017.
State Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa said this increase would be effective from January 1, 2017.
The DA would increase from 125 to 132 per cent after this comes into effect,
