[Pune,]FTII Students Call Off 139-day Strike, protests still on
Agitating students of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India today unilaterally called off their 139-day-old strike, but made it clear their protest against appointment of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as its chairman will continue.
They also ruled out any “proactive engagement” with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry until the issue of appointment of Chauhan, best known for his role of Yudhishthir in teleserial Mahabharata, and four other FTII society members, gets resolved.
FTII Students Association (FSA) representative Vikas Urs said the students have taken a collective decision to go back to academics with “immediate effect” in the best interest of the fraternity.
Referring to FSA’s talks with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which could not end the stalemate, Urs said the ministry conveyed the impression that it had no mandate to take a decision in the matter.

Rathore Emotionally Appealed media to play constructive role
The agitating Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students today called off their 18- day-old “hunger strike” in response to the government’s communication inviting them for a dialogue to resolve their demands at a meeting slated for September 29 in Mumbai.
Ranjit Nair, a representative of the FTII Students’ Association (FSA), which is protesting against appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as FTII Chairman, said the “hunger strike” is being called off to facilitate talks with the government.
The students had yesterday said they were ready to withdraw their hunger strike to pave the way for a dialogue if the Information and Broadcasting Ministry confirmed a date and venue for talks.
Nair, however, clarified that although the relay hunger strike undertaken by the students in batches of three was being withdrawn, the general strike, that started on June 12 with a boycott of classes, will continue till the issues raised by them are resolved during the proposed talks.

[New Delhi,Pune] FTII Protesting Students,Showing Roots,Seek Rahul Gandhi’s Intervention
Students of FTII demanding removal of small screen actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the institute have approached Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, seeking his intervention to check the “assault on institutions of higher learning”.
Sources in Congress said that the students have invited Gandhi to come to Pune and support their cause.
250 FTII students are on strike against Chouhan’s appointment and are demanding the formation a committee which will make the rules for the FTII society.
A number of filmmakers have also resigned as members of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society expressing their solidarity with the students.
Students have continued their strike for almost 40 days, boycotting academic work after failure of their talks with I and B minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi on July 3.
FTII students’ association (FSA) has declared that the strike will continue till their main demand for removal of Chauhan–who they allege lacks vision and stature to head FTII–and reconstitution of the FTII Society is accepted.
In the letter to Gandhi, Student Leader Nachimuthu is also learnt to have requested Gandhi to support them and take up the issue of FTII like he had taken up the issue of Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle in IIT Madras.
After agitation and a political controversy, the ban on the Dalit students body Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC) was finally revoked.
