DRI Seizes Smuggled Gold And Black Money In Old Delhi

[New Delhi]Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) makes seizure of about Rs 12.91 crore including 21 kg Gold worth Rs. 6.47 crore, and Indian Currency notes worth Rs 6.44 crore
The Delhi Zonal Unit (DZU) of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ministry of Finance seized 20.64 kilogram gold and Indian currency notes worth Rs 6.44 crore from a shop in the old Delhi area.
The gold is valued at about Rs. 6.47 crore, of which 20 bars are of 1 kg each with foreign markings and of 995 purity. Searches also resulted in recovery of Rs 6.44 crore of Indian currency notes, being the sale proceeds of smuggled gold. The total value of the seizure is about Rs 12.91 crore. Two persons have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
Last month, the Delhi Zonal Unit of DRI had made a record detection of smuggling of gold of about 7,000 Kilograms, valued at about Rs 2,000 crore and had arrested two persons.
The main kingpin has also been detained under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Act (COFEPOSA), 1974.

DRI today claims to have Busted Gold Smuggling Racket @ Rs 2,000 crore
A major gold smuggling racket that illegally brought around 7,000 kilograms of gold worth over Rs 2,000 crore from Myanmar to India in past over two years has been busted by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
The syndicate was smuggling the gold through Indo-Myanmar land border and then bringing it to Delhi and other locations in domestic flights by declaring the yellow metal as valuable cargo, .
As per the DRI in a press release ,officers of Delhi zonal unit of the agency seized 10 kg of gold at the domestic cargo terminal of Indira Gandhi International airport recently. The seized gold bars of 24 carat purity were admittedly smuggled into India from Myanmar and brought to Delhi from Guwahati by a domestic flight,But name of the domestic flight has not been disclosed
Market value of the 10 kg of seized gold is Rs 3.1 crore.
Two accused–a Guwahati-based businessman and his Delhi-based aide–have been arrested by the DRI and sent to judicial custody. They had brought gold to Delhi from Guwahati on 617 occasions by declaring it as the valuable cargo in domestic flights,

2.5 kg of gold jewellery concealed in a toilet of an Air India flight, which today arrived at Goa airport from Dubai, was seized by the Customs and Central Excise officials.
The flight left for Bengaluru from Goa after the Customs officials completed their formalities.

In another case, the customs official recovered foreign origin gold from a passenger who had arrived from Mumbai on Tuesday.
Detailed examination of the passenger in person resulted in recovery of foreign origin gold, weighing 2.5 kgs having market value of Rs 68.13 lakh concealed in inner pocket of his pant
In a related development, international airports across the country have been put on alert to check gold smuggling which might rise because of forthcoming festivals like Diwali and marriage season.
Gold sales usually go high at the time of Diwali, especially on ‘Dhanteras’ (that comes two days before Diwali is celebrated) as people consider buying the yellow metal as good omen on this day.
Incidentally cases of gold smuggling have shot up both in the country and in particular at the IGIA. During 2014-15, a total of 230 people were arrested by the customs in 388 cases of gold smuggling. About 596 kgs of gold worth Rs 155 crore was seized in these cases,
Whereas, in 2013-14, about 363 cases were registered in which 353 kgs gold worth Rs 92 crore was seized. A total of 123 people were arrested for smuggling, the sources said.
In April and August this year, the customs officials have arrested 100 people and registered 169 cases. As much as 293 kgs of gold valuing Rs 76 crore was seized in these cases,

The Customs at the NSCBI airport today recovered 1.75 kg of gold bars valued at Rs 46.72 lakh from under one of the seats of a Thai Airways aircraft which came from Bangkok.
Airport sources said that five gold bars, each weighing 350 grams, were kept inside the cushion of seat, which were seized as unclaimed.
The sources said that the person who was smuggling in the gold from Bangkok must have got wind of the Customs’ knowledge of the contraband and escaped.
