Hardik has been arrested for failing to appear before a court in a 2015 sedition case.
The Congress general secretary said Patel has been fighting for the employment of youth and the rights of farmers.
The BJP is repeatedly harassing Patel, Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
Patel was arrested on Saturday night from Viramgam taluka in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district for failing to appear before a trial court in connection with the sedition case, hours after a warrant was issued against him.

A Gujarat court sentenced Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel to two years imprisonment in a case of rioting and arson in Visnagar town here in 2015.
Judge V P Agarwal, of the sessions court at Visnagar, held guilty Hardik Patel and his two aides, Lalji Patel and A K Patel under IPC sections pertaining to rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly.
The three were awarded two years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each.
The other 14 accused were let off by the court for want of enough evidence against them.
Hardik Patel is one of the accused in the FIR which was filed at Visnagar in Mehsana district on July 23, 2015, when a rally of the Patel community seeking reservation turned violent, resulting in damage to property and assault on some media persons.
During the violent agitation, the mob had torched a car and vandalised the office of local BJP MLA Rishikesh Patel.

Hardik Patel today did not get any immediate relief from the Supreme Court which said his plea challenging invocation of sedition charge for allegedly inciting a mob during the quota stir for Patel community will be heard after Gujarat police completes probe in the case.
A bench, comprising justices J S Khehar and R Banumathi, directed Gujarat police to complete the investigation within one-and-a-half month in the sedition case and file a report before it in a sealed cover and posted hearing for January 5.
The bench also directed the police not to file the charge sheet in the sedition case without the apex court’s permission.
The apex court also declined to interfere with the proceedings of the Gujarat high court which is proceeding with another case in which Hardik has been accused of stage- managing his own abduction by the police.
The bench said that it was not interfering in another case of habeas corpus pending before the Gujarat high court in which the police have accused Hardik Patel of stage managing his own abduction.
“It is clarified that the high court may continue with the matter in the special criminal appeal pertaining to habeas corpus,” the bench said.
Before passing the order, the bench took on record the submissions of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the state government and senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Hardik Patel.
“We consider it just and appropriate to defer the hearing in the matter (sedition case). List it after one and a half months on the completion of investigation,” the bench said while posting the matter for January 5.
The bench said “we must allow the high court to proceed with another case (habeas corpus).

Police today detained Patel quota stir leader Hardik Patel along with 35 of his supporters from Varachha area here for trying to take out the ‘Ekta Yatra’ without taking prior permission from authorities.
Hardik and others were taken to police headquarters after the detention,
Speaking to reporters condemning the police action, the 22-year-old firebrand leader said, “The Gujarat government wants to muzzle our voice. They want to harass us. The Gujarat government and the state police wants violence in the state.
This act is against the spirit of democracy.”
Hardik had till yesterday kept his plans secret about the Ekta rally after being denied permission to hold it from Dandi to Ahmedabad.
Earlier today, Hardik’s associate and the convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) in Surat- Alpesh Kathiria-announced that they will take out the rally from Mangadh chowk in Varachha area of the city.
Hardik, who has emerged as the prominent face of Patels in Gujarat, has been spearheading the agitation to get reservation for Patel community under Other Backward Class (OBC).
Hardik had announced to take out the “reverse Dandi March” twice, but canceled the plan after Navsari district administration denied permission to them.
Hardik has been hogging limelight after his aggressive speech in a rally on August 25 and the subsequent violence that gripped the state after his detention which left 10 people dead in Gujarat.
