International Telecommunication Union[ ITU ]Launches its fourth Challenge on Internet of Things for Social Good
4th challenge in 2014 series Is launched ,in partnership with IEEE.
ITU Telecom Young Innovators Competition has launched its fourth challenge in the 2014 edition. It calls for young people aged between 18 and 30 from around the world to submit ideas for concepts of start-ups aimed at using the Internet of Things (IoT) for social good in order to significantly improve the lives of people globally.
The challenge opens the way for two winning concepts for start-ups to attend ITU Telecom World 2014, the leading platform for debate, networking and showcasing for the global ICT community, that will be held in Doha, Qatar, 7 – 10 December 2014.
Challenge-4 seeks ideas on how benefits from the ‘Internet of Things’ can be used for social good and spread to countries around the world, especially to emerging economies where development is currently slower due to the cost of the technology, lack of underlying infrastructure and the need for strong, widespread connectivity..

[Geneva,] I T U Invites Journalists For Plenipotentiary Conference In Korea
Reminding Journalists ITU Says that journos have just three more weeks to submit their online application for media accreditation for the 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, which will take place in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 20 October – 7 November 2014. Formal accreditation closes on 14 October 2014.
The ITU Plenipotentiary is the world’s largest meeting of international policy makers from the information and communication (ICT) sector. Known as PP-14, the conference is expected to attract around 3,000 participants, including Heads of State and around 130 VIPs from over 160 countries, including government ministers and CEOs.
It is held every four years to set the strategic direction of ITU and to develop policies and recommendations that address the evolving needs of the Union’s members.
Issues on the PP-14 agenda include digital inclusion and broadband rollout, broader international cooperation on ICT development, and new strategies to encourage membership and multi-stakeholder participation.

By The End Of This Year There Will be Almost 3 Billion Internet users,2/3rd Of Them Coming From the Developing World,
New figures released by ITU today indicate that, by end 2014, there will be almost 3 billion Internet users, two-thirds of them coming from the developing world, and that the number of mobile-broadband subscriptions will reach 2.3 billion globally. 55% of these subscriptions are expected to be in the developing world.
Mobile-cellular subscriptions will reach almost 7 billion by end 2014, and 3.6 billion of these will be in the Asia-Pacific region. The increase is mostly due to growth in the developing world where mobile-cellular subscriptions will account for 78% of the world’s total
The newly released ICT figures confirm once again that information and communication technologies continue to be the key drivers of the information society,” said ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré.
“If we want to understand the information society, we have to measure it,” Brahima Sanou, the Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, said. “Without measurement we cannot track progress or identify gaps which require our attention.”
Fixed-telephone subscriptions continue to decline
Results show that fixed-telephone penetration has been declining for the past five years. By end 2014, there will be about 100 million fewer fixed-telephone subscriptions than in 2009.

ITU Conference Adopts Dubai Action Plan And Sets 4 Years Agenda For ICT development.
The Dubai Action Plan, adopted today by the ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference, sets the agenda for telecommunication and information and communication technology development over the next four years.
Under the theme ‘Broadband for Sustainable Development’, the Conference focused on development priorities and agreed on the programmes, projects and initiatives to implement them. The theme underlines ITU’s commitment to leverage broadband as a catalyst to meet the goals of sustainable development.
The Dubai Declaration states that “Universal and affordable access to telecommunications and information and communication technologies is essential for the world’s economic, social and cultural development, and contributes to building a global economy and information society. Widespread access to and accessibility of telecommunications and information and communication technologies applications and services provide new socio-economic opportunities for all people.”

ITU meeting in Dubai focuses on connectivity for Small Island States
–At a forum held in Dubai today, ITU presented its satellite project to connect Pacific Island States and discussed ways to replicate it in other regions, specifically in Small Island Developing States, known as SIDS, which face many challenges due to their unique characteristics and vulnerabilities in the pursuit of sustainable development.
The objective of the satellite project is to provide Internet connection to communities living on remote islands. The aim is to develop low cost, reliable, and diverse satellite communications capacity for the socio-economic development of the Pacific Islands region.
To get the best return on investment, the same telecommunications/ICT infrastructure/resources will be used for emergency telecommunications to ensure public safety when disasters strike.
The forum on “Connectivity for Small Island Developing States” was held on the eve of ITU’s World Telecommunication Development Conference that opens in Dubai on 30 March and will be in session until 10 April.

भारत के राष्ट्रपति श्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने हर वर्ष 8 मार्च को मनाए जाने वाले अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस के अवसर पर जारी अपने संदेश में कहा-
‘अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस के अवसर पर मैं अपने देश के सभी क्षेत्रों में रहने वाली महिलाओं का अभिनन्दन करता हूं और उन्हें शुभ कामनाएं देता हूं।‘
उन्होंने प्राचीन भारत में महिलाओं के स्टेटस के विषय में बोलते हुए कहा ” भारत में स्त्रियों ने – राजनीतिक, शैक्षिक और आध्यात्मिक सभी क्षेत्रों में महानता प्राप्त की है। प्राचीन भारत में उन्हें स्वतंत्रता प्राप्त थी और वे सार्वजनिक जीवन में बराबरी के आधार पर भाग लिया करती थी। ऋग्वेद में महिलाओं को ऊंचा स्थान दिया गया है। यत्रनार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते, रमन्ते तत्र देवता यानि जहॉं भी महिलाओं का आदर होता है, देवता वहीं रहते हैं। तैत्रीय उपनिषद में मातृदेवो भव कहा गया है इसका मतलब है आपकी माता आपके लिए देवता की तरह हो” प्रेसिडेंट ने स्वामी विवेकानन्द को कोट करते हुए कहा ” जिस देश में भी नारियों को सम्मान दिया जाता है वह महान बनता है”
“भारतीय संविधान में भी स्त्रियों की समानता पर जोर दिया गया है। संविधान में ही नहीं बल्कि भारतीय राष्ट्र में भी महिलाओं को बराबरी का दर्जा हासिल है। यहां राज्य ऐसे सक्रिय उपाय करता है जिससे लिंग आधारित भेदभाव नहीं होता। महिला सशक्तिकरण को ऐसा तत्व माना जाना चाहिए जिससे लिंग समानता की ओर हमारे प्रयास जाहिर ही न हों, बल्कि वे राष्ट्र निर्माण में उनके पूरी तरह शामिल होने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएं।
हमें एक समाज के रूप में महिलाओं के प्रति नकारात्मक अवधारणा बदलने के लिए मिलकर काम करना चाहिए। महिलाओं को सुरक्षित और अनुकूल वातावरण मिलना चाहिए जहां उनकी प्रतिभा प्रस्फुटित हो और वे राष्ट्र निर्माण में पूरी तरह योगदान दे सकें। महिलाओं के इस अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस पर हम सब महिला दिवस मनाने से हमारे समाज के हर सदस्य मे महिलाओं के लिए सर्वोच्च सम्मान की भावना बढ़े।
आई टी यूं ITU ने भी आई सी टी ICT के माध्यम से महिलाओं के विकास की बात कही है |आई टी यूं के अनुसार ७९ देशों में एक मिलियन डिस एडवांटेज महिलायें यूं एन के सहयोग से आई सी टी का लाभ उठा रही है |

गौरतलब है कि .अमेरिका में सोशलिस्ट पार्टी के आवाहन, पर पहले सबसे पहले यह दिवस २८ फरवरी १९०९ में मनाया गया। उस समय इसका प्रमुख ध्येय महिलाओं को वोट देने के अधिकार दिलवाना था क्योंकि, उस समय अधिकर देशों में महिला को वोट देने का अधिकार नहीं था।
१९१७ में रुस की महिलाओं ने, महिला दिवस पर रोटी और कपड़े के लिये हड़ताल पर जाने का फैसला किया। यह हड़ताल भी ऐतिहासिक थी।भारत में सत्ता में भागे दारी केलिए महिला रिजर्वेशन बिल संसद में लंबित है और उसके प्रति राजनीतिक पार्टियों की केवल बयान बाजी ही हो रही हैं
ITU Launches Competition for underserved communities
For the third consecutive year, ITU has launched a competition that recognizes excellence in the implementation of projects and initiatives which further the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals of improving connectivity to information and communication technologies (ICTs), particularly within underserved communities.
Organized into four phases which will run until mid-April 2014, the contest comprises 18 categories directly linked to the WSIS Action Lines outlined in the Geneva Plan of Action. Winners for each category will be announced at an award ceremony on 13 April 2014, during the WSIS+10 High-Level Event.
