Neelam Kapur[IIS] Takes over as Director General, Sports Authority of India
Ms. Neelam Kapur has taken over as Director General, Sports Authority of India today.
An Indian Information Service officer of 1982 batch, she has earlier handled important assignments in National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) and headed Directorate of Film Festivals, Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP) and Directorate of Field Publicity(DFP).
During her stint in PIB as Principal Director General, Ms. Neelam Kapur was head of media operations for CommonWealth Games held in New Delhi in 2010.

Cash award distribution function was held today for medal winners of Rio Olympics/Paralympics, 2016.
Vijay Goel, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports was the chief guest.
In his address, the sports Minister assured the people about the commitment of his government towards the promotion and development of the sports in the country.
Vijay Goel presented the cash awards. Amount of cash awards is as follows:
[1]Shri Mariyappan Thangavelu (Gold in High Jump), – 75 Lakhs.
[2]Shri Devendra Jhajharia (Gold in Javelin Throw) – 75 Lakhs
[3]Ms. P.V. Sindhu (Silver in Badminton) – Rs. 50 Lakhs.
[4]Ms. Deepa Malik (Silver in Shot Put) – Rs. 50 Lakhs
[5]Ms. Sakshi Malik (Bronze in Wrestling) – Rs. 30 Lakhs

Sports Sector Gets Infrastructure Status:Eligibility For Banks Support

[New Delhi]Centre To Include Sports Sector Under Infrastructure Status:Banks May Provide Long Term Financial Support
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Affairs had moved a proposal for inclusion of Sports in the harmonized master list of infrastructure sub-sectors so that the sports sector becomes eligible for obtaining long term financial support from banks and other financial institutions on the same principle as is available to other infrastructure projects.
The Ministry of Finance after a series of meetings and discussions with different agencies including RBI have decided that sports infrastructure will be included under the Harmonized Master List of Infrastructure Sub sectors and that it “includes the provision of Sports Stadium and Infrastructure for Academies for Training / Research in Sports and Sports-related activities” In this connection Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs, had issued a Gazette Notification dated 09th September 2016.
This inclusion would encourage private investment in a public good which has socio-economic externalities in a country with young population.
It will also bolster investment in sports infrastructure sector which will contribute to the economy and help in promotion of health and fitness of the people of this country as also provide opportunities for employment in the new and exciting sectors. It goes without saying that investment of the private sector will widen the platform from where the country can become a sporting power in future.

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports, Vijay Goel here today conferred Arjuna Awards to cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane in a function held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Rohit Sharma was conferred Arjuna Award for the year 2015 and Ajinkya Rahane for the year 2016.
Speaking on the occasion Goel said that while there is no doubt that cricket is among the most popular game in India, the current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to promote indigenous and other sports as well. He said , the recent success of Athletes at Paralympics , 2016 has made every Indian proud.
The Arjuna Awards, instituted in 1961, are given to sports persons for consistently outstanding performance for four years preceding the year of award and who have also shown qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline.
The awardees are given a statuette, a certificate, ceremonial dress and award money of Rs. 5 lakh.

A special cleanliness awareness drive was organized by the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to mark the successful completion of the ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’.
NSS volunteers and other youth were out in large number on the streets of the Capital to convey the message of Swacchta to general public through placards and action on ground. Secretary Deptt. of Youth Affairs Rajeev Gupta encouraged the NSS volunteers and students from different educational institutes on the occasion.
Deptt. of Youth Affairs organized Swacchta Pakhwada from 16th August to 31 August, 2016 all over the country in which a day-wise schedule of activities was chalked out for the NSS volunteers and youth clubs of NYKS.
The programmes included seminars and pledge on ‘Swachhta’, cleaning of campuses of educational, health and welfare institutions, public places and public statues, door to door campaign about swachhta and making the village ODF (Open Defecation Free), rallies, Quiz competitions, street plays etc

alleging that It is misusing name of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India
It is clarified by the ministry that It has come to the notice of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports that “The Scouts/Guides Organization” having its headquarters at 4- B Mahalaxmi Squire, Sector 12, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad (UP)
is misusing the name of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India in their letter head stating that it is affiliated with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
The Organization has also sought application for various posts for appointment in their Regional Office, Nagpur in Local Newspaper namely “Lokmat, Nagpur Edition” dated 14/05/2016 misusing the name of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India by stating that it is affiliated with the Ministry.
It is hereby informed to all general public and concerned authorities that Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has neither given any recognition or affiliation to The Scouts/Guides Organization nor is giving grant-in-aid to this organization to conduct scouting and guiding activities in any State/UT of the country. The organization is also not an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports as claimed by them in their letterhead/banners/posters.

Sports Ministry to consider Suo Moto Medal winners of Rio Olympics for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2016 and Arjuna Awards 2016
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has decided in relaxation of provisions of the Schemes of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to consider suo moto medal winners in individual events in Rio Olympics 2016, who have already not been conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in the past for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2016.
Medal winners in team events, who have played stellar roles in the medal won by the team for the country in Rio Olympics 2016 such as number of goals scored, number of goals saved etc., and who have already not been conferred with Arjuna Award in the past will be considered for Arjuna Awards 2016 in relaxation of provisions of the scheme of Arjuna Awards.
Medal winners of Rio Olympics 2016 will be considered for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2016 and Arjuna Awards 2016 so that they need not wait for one full year after their medal winning performance at Rio Olympics 2016.
As per the existing provisions of the Schemes of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards, sports achievements of the sportspersons for the last four years preceding the year of award, i.e., sports achievements during the period 2011 to 2015 are to be considered

BCCI Responsible For Any Unethical Betting+Match-fixing During IPL- 2014:Sports Ministry

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Has Given no objection To Indian Premier League 2014[IPL]
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has sent a reply to Prof. R.S. Shetty, Chief Administrative Officer, BCCI, Mumbai.
intimating that the Ministry has no objection from sports angle for conducting the I P L 2014
It is also stated that Govt Will Bear no cost to this event.
Clearance from Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs Is to be obtained by B C C I separately.
Apart from this clearance It is made clear that the responsibility to deal with betting and match-fixing during IPL- 2014 will rest with BCCI.
Though the above approval of MYAS is being given in view of short time left for commencement of the event, BCCI is requested to furnish the following information latest by 10/4/2014 :-
(i)As to why a non-regular venue has been selected for holding some matches of IPL-2014 instead of choosing a venue which is on the regular international calendar of the ICC.
(ii)What mechanisms, BCCI have put in place to ensure that unethical practices like betting and match-fixing, etc. do not take place during IPL-2014?
(iii)Amount of License fees paid to ICC for IPL 2014.
(iv)BCCI is required to contribute towards National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). The amount of contribution to NSDF may please be specified which may be based on either the percentage of profit from IPL 2014 or consolidated lump sum.”

Central Sports Minister Jitendra Singh Inaugurated Following Three New Sport Projects
[1] National Cycling Academy
[2]Swimming Pools
[3] Community Connect Scheme
The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Sports Authority of India National Cycling Academy (SAI NCA). The academy with complete back-up facilities has been set up following the decision taken in the 42nd meeting of the Governing Body of SAI. The academy will be financed by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports through Sports Authority of India with a long-term perspective of making it a top notch Academy which is financially independent and a self-sustaining venture. Speaking on the occasion, the Sports Minister Shri Jitendra Singh said, the Academy shall cater to the identification and nurturing of young talent at both sub-junior and junior levels and the training of elite athletes on a run up to their preparations for international/national competitions.
He said, the Academy which is being housed in world-class infrastructure is supported by a proper gymnasium and the latest technical support like a fully-equipped workshop for cycles. He said, the coaches shall be recruited from both India and abroad for the said Academy.
Since Cycling Federation of India, an affiliate of the International Cycling Federation, is a major stakeholder in the Cycling discipline, necessary arrangements by way of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) seeking their support and giving them conducive environment shall be entered into.
In the second phase, after the initial setting up and stabilizing of the Academy is achieved, SAI shall also approach the World Cycling Centre of UCI at Aigle (Switzerland) to make their coaches available from time to time to guide in the training techniques and finally convert the academy into a satellite centre of the UCI World Cycling Centre.

[b]The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh here today launched the project to create Swimming Pools one each at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS), Indira Gandhi Sports Complex (IGSC) and Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range (Dr. KSSR). The total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 907.50 lakhs.
Creation of Indoor Learner’s pool at Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex and Kiddies pool at MDCNS were already approved in 41st meeting of SAI Governing Body on 24.09.2013.
New Swimming Pools are being created at JNS, IGSC and Dr. KSSR. The estimated cost per swimming pool is Rs. 302.50 lakhs. The total estimated cost for three swimming pools will be Rs. 907.50 lakhs
[bMinister Launched the Community Connect Scheme at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and the Syama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex. The Community Connect Scheme has been launched with the objective of making various Sports Authority of India (SAI) Stadia multidisciplinary to include sports as well as recreational facilities, so that the local communities can utilize them for recreation as well as overall health and fitness.
SAI has been utilizing the stadia for hosting District, State, National and International Sports events. It is also implementing the ‘Come & Play Scheme’ encouraging the youth to utilize the stadia facilities to hone their skills in the Sports disciplines of their choice. This highly subsidised endeavour provides world class facilities along with training under the tutelage of qualified Coaches.
To further exploit the underutilized spaces available in stadia, the Community Connect Scheme visualizes increased participation of the community thereby increasing the footfalls in the stadia to make it a hub of sports and fitness activities.
In addition to the existing sports facilities available, facilities like Walking/Jogging Track, Cycling Track, Volleyball Courts, Cricket Nets, Billiards & Snooker, Fitness Centres, Aerobics, Yoga, Skating, Swimming Pools, Squash Courts, Chess Rooms, Bridge Rooms, Carrom etc. are being launched. There will be multiple choices of both indoor and outdoor recreational and sports facilities on offer.
