SAD activists today burnt effigies of Sonia and Cong leaders
Activists of Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today held a protest march and burnt effigies of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders for the party’s alleged “role” in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Effigies of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for their alleged “involvement” in the riots in Delhi, were also burnt.
Led by SAD’s Kapurthala district president Sarwan Singh Kular, the protesters assembled on the premises of local Gurdwara Akalian and marched from there through the city markets before converging outside bus stand along the National Highway 1 where the effigies were set ablaze.
During the march, anti-Congress slogans were raised while protestors demanded justice for the victims of the 1984 riots.
Party councillors, including Phagwara Corporation deputy mayor Ranjit Singh Khurana, also joined the protest.

According to police, an activist of Akal Students Federation Gurdip Singh had put up a poster of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale outside his house in Adarsh Nagar yesterday.
This was objected to by Deepak Bhardwaj, state unit president of Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Surakhsha Samiti. Bhardwaj then put up outside his house a poster of General AS Vaidya who had played key role in the Blue Star Operation in which Bhindrawale was killed.
Houses of both Gurdip Singh and Bhardwaj are situated side by side in the same locality.
Soon after, Federation activists converged outside the house of Gurdip Singh, police said, adding Bhardawaj also called supporters of his organisation.
Police was called and a contingent was deployed in front of their houses to ward off any ugly incident. Additional force was requisitioned from adjoining districts as a precautionay step and kept on stand-by, police said.
Police authorities intervened and brought the two sides to a negotiating table.
After the talks which went on till midnight, both sides relented. While Bhardawaj removed Vaidya’s poster, Federation activists removed Bhindrawale’s poster.

Two alleged drug peddlers were today arrested and 200 gm of heroin pegged at Rs one crore in the street market was found from their possession,
The duo, identified as
Tushan Sharma alias Maddi and
Kuldip Singh alias Baija,
were arrested and 100 gramme each of heroin was recovered from them,
They Are Residents of Hadiabad and Kapurthala respectively, the two accused were arrested by a police party during a checking in Satnampura Police Station area.

Several BSP leaders were today arrested for staging dharna against the alleged non-implementation of Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme by some private colleges in Punjab.
Following the arrests, BSP activists along with radical Sikh groups and SC girl students of colleges organised a dharna and blocked Phagwara-Nakodar road near National Highway 1.
Former Punjab BSP General Secretary Jarnail Nangal along with president of local unit of BSP Student Front Pardeep Mall,party activists Rajinder Kler and Balbir Singh Thakur, and President of Punjab Ambedkar Sena Mool Nivasi Harbhajan Suman were arrested this morning under Sections 107/151 (threat to public order and peace) of CrPc,
Court of Sub-divisional Magistrate Balbir Raj Singh, sent them into judicial custody
Jarnail Nangal had spearheaded the agitation over the non-implementation of Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme by organizing a demonstration and a dharna outside residence of local MLA Som Parkash here yesterday.
He had threatened to intensify the stir if the scheme was not implemented in totality and SC/BC/OBC students were not issued roll numbers today, or were harassed under the garb of the scheme.
A number of BSP activists, led by party’s Block Samiti member Sukhwinder Singh Shergill and supported by radical Sikh groups, took out a protest march after his arrest.
They first staged a brief demonstration outside the office of SP Ashwani Kumar in local Town Hall and then sat on dharna, blocking traffic on the Phagwara-Nakodar road near National Highway 1.
However, the international Sada-e-Sarhad Buses, plying between India and Pakistan, passed here normally as the traffic on NH1 continued to flow as usual, Police Claimed .
Meanwhile, another group of party activists blocked traffic on local Hoshiarpur road.
