The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced five-day work week for its officers and employees beginning February 29 and extended the current work hours by 45 minutes.
It will also cut down expenses on fuel and electricity.
State employees have been demanding the five-day work week since the last many years.
The decision was taken at the state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray here, which will benefit nearly 20 lakh officers and employees.
At present, the work hours of the government employees in Mumbai are from 9.45 am to 5.30 pm and from 10 am to 5.45 pm in the rest of Maharashtra including lunch time of 30 minutes.
The new work hours will be from 9.45 am to 6.15 pm including the lunch break for 30 minutes between 1 pm and 2 pm.
Apart from the Central government employees, the five-day week structure is currently in place for employees of Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments.

As per Sena leader Sanjay Raut ,There have been no talks yet between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on government formation in Maharashtra,
Talking to reporters ahead of the meeting of Shiv Sena MLAs with Thackeray, Raut said legislators of his party and the opposition Congress and NCP “would not cross sides”.
The BJP and the Shiv Sena are engaged in a bitter tug-of-war over the latter’s demand for equal distribution of portfolios and sharing the chief minister’s post.
The BJP has rejected the Sena’s demand for sharing the chief minister’s post for two-and-a-half years each.
The tenure of the present Assembly ends on November 9.

Sena, an NDA ally, has been opposing the BJP and its policies.
Its MPs in the Lok Sabha stayed away from voting in the no-confidence vote brought against the government by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and supported by various opposition parties.

शिवसेना अध्यक्ष उद्धव ठाकरे को स्वास्थ्य जांच के बाद लीलावती अस्पताल से आज छुट्टी दे दी गई ।
युवा सेना के प्रमुख आदित्य ठाकरे के अनुसार ‘‘बुधवार को उद्धव जी की नियमित स्वास्थ्य जांच हुई और आपकी दुआओं से रिपोर्ट बिल्कुल ठीक हैं ।’’ उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘मीडिया में ‘थकान’ के बारे में आई कुछ खबरों के विपरीत, यह पूर्व नियोजित जांच थी ।’’ बीस जुलाई 2012 को 55 वर्षीय उद्धव की एंजियोप्लास्टी हुई थी । इसके बाद नवंबर 2012 में उनकी दूसरी एंजियोप्लास्टी हुई थी ।
