(Chd,Pb) Destructive Swarms Locusts Spotted in Various Villages of Punjab
Locusts were spotted in some villages of Punjab’s Fazilka, Muktsar, Bhatinda
Farmers from the three districts have urged the agriculture department officials to take urgent steps to tackle the pests.
According to officials, locusts, popularly known as ‘Tiddi Dal’, have come from neighbouring Rajasthan which was attacked by one of the most destructive pests earlier this month following which authorities there undertook a massive exercise to contain the outbreak.
A few locust swarms were also reported in Anoopgarh and Sri Ganganagar districts of Rajasthan after their attack emanated from the desert area of Pakistan, they said.
The surveillance by scientists of Punjab Agricultural University at Abohar revealed the presence of locust hoppers in small numbers or groups (5 to 20) in Fazilka, Muktsar and Bathinda districts
As per Experts Locusts are short-horned grasshoppers with highly migratory habits and voracious feeding behaviour. Appearance of locusts in winter months is a new phenomenon and may be linked to climate change events
India has not witnessed any full blown locust cycles after 1962, however, during 1978 and 1993, large scale upsurges were observed.
Localised locust breeding has also been reported and controlled during 1998, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010. Since 2010, the situation has remained calm and no major breeding and swarm formation have been reported

The Jammu and Kashmir government has set up a ten-member committee to declare Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake and its surrounding areas as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ), following concerns over its shrinking size.
Pollution and encroachments have resulted in the Dal Lake shrinking from its original area of 22 square kilometers to about 10 square kilometers, according to an assessment by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) in 2017.
The DCI also found that the world-famous lake’s capacity has shrunk to about 40 per cent and that its water quality has deteriorated.

(ChdPb) Capt Uses Baton on Stubble Burner Farmers
Capt ordered to Open Treasure for Stubble Burner Farmers in Punjab
Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday ordered the state’s agriculture department to provide financial assistance to small and marginal farmers who had not burnt any paddy straw.
The chief minister also ordered stringent action against violators of the ban on stubble burning, in compliance with the apex court’s directives on penalization of such farmers, according to an official statement issued here.
Singh chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court orders, which would put an additional burden on the cash strapped state, which was already reeling under fiscal problems in the GST regime.
The meeting was informed that more than 900 FIRs had so far been registered against erring farmers, mostly in Muktsar and Bathinda, with some cases reported in Sangrur.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the governments of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to give an incentive of Rs 100 per quintal within 7 days to small and marginal farmers who have not burnt crop stubble. The burning of crop residue in the three states is stated to be responsible for 44 per cent of the air pollution in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
