 Punjab’s main opposition party AAP on Tuesday held statewide protests and its workers observed fast over the alleged multi-crore post matric scholarship scam.
As per Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Harpal Singh Cheema , hunger strike and demonstrations led by district incharges of the party’s SC wing were held in front of the offices of deputy commissioners in all districts.
Allegations of Rs 64 crore misappropriation from the scholarship fund for Scheduled Caste students had surfaced last year.
Thereafter, the chief minister had directed the state chief secretary to conduct a thorough inquiry.
The chief secretary’s had exonerated Dharamsot.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader also demanded that the state government release pending amount of Rs 1,539 crore under the Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Castes (PMS-SCs)

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday appealed to all other legislators who had come in contact with them to avoid attending the one-day Vidhan Sabha session tomorrow.
The protests by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by their MLAs, were endangering the lives of people, said Captain Amarinder, pointing to the AAP dharnas in various parts of the state since August 20. With anything between 25 to 250 people present at each of these gatherings/dharnas, they had become tinder boxes for sparking further spread of the pandemic, said the Chief Minister, urging the party to call off their protests.
Captainpointed out that of the eight AAP leaders/MLAs who had spearheaded these day/night dharnas so far, two had already tested positive and each of them had come in contact with scores of other people till now. In terms of MLAs, 4 of AAP members (including on unattached) were Covid positive
The Chief Minister reiterated his appeal to all political parties to refrain from physical protests at this critical juncture, when cases in the state were spiralling and projected to see a major spike in the coming weeks.
During a VC Covid review meeting with the Chief Minister and other officials, Chief Secretary Vini Mahajan appealed to all political parties that their MLAs who had come in contact with Covid positive colleagues should reach the Assembly premises early for testing in case they wish to attend.

Opposition Aam Aadmi Party MLAs in Punjab held a protest outside the state Assembly on Tuesday, seeking from the Congress-led government to fulfil its promises made with youths and government employees.
Members of the AAP, led by leader of opposition and legislator Harpal Singh Cheema, shouted slogans and carried placards against the Amarinder Singh-led government.
“The state government has not fulfilled its promises made with youth for giving them employment. The government’s ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar Yojana’ scheme has also failed,” Cheema alleged.
He also accused the state government of having failed in not paying arrears and dearness allowance to the state government employees

Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Harpal Singh Cheema slammed the Chandigarh Police for registering the case. Power rates in Punjab were hiked by 36 paise a unit with effect from January 1 for domestic consumers.
Party leaders alleged that power consumers were being forced to pay between Rs 9 and Rs 12 a unit which was “much higher” as compared to electricity rates in other states.The FIR was filed on Saturday against the Sangrur MP, around seven-eight legislators and others on the statement of a woman constable here, who complained that AAP activists had pelted stones and assaulted her and some other police personnel during the protest on Friday last.
FIR has been registered against Mann and others under various Sections of the IPC including rioting, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant in discharge of his duty, disobedience to order promulgated by public servant.
The protesters created law and order problem and violated the district magistrate’s order under Section 144 in the area,
Police had used water cannons on Friday last to stop the Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers protesting against the hike in power tariff in Punjab from moving towards Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s residence here.
The main opposition party in Punjab was also seeking scrapping of power purchase agreements signed during the previous SAD-BJP regime with private plants.

A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party [AAP] MLAs met the Punjab Assembly Speaker and urged him to allow live telecast of the proceedings of the forthcoming Budget Session.
The delegation was led by Leader of Opposition Harpal Cheema and MLA Aman Arora.
The Budget Session of the Punjab State Assembly will begin here from February 12.
As per AAP leaders, this will improve the functioning of elected representatives on the floor of the House.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana K P Singh Monday served a notice to Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for his disqualification from the state assembly.
Khaira has been given 15 days to file his reply as to why action under the provisions of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution should not be initiated against him
The notice was given to Khaira following petitions filed by Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema and Harsimran Singh, a resident of Bholath.
In his petition to the Speaker, Cheema had said that Khaira had voluntarily given up the membership of the AAP and had floated his own political party ‘Punjabi Ekta Party’.
He had quit the AAP on January 6, six months after he was ousted from the post of Leader of Opposition of the Punjab Assembly.
However, he had not resigned as MLA and had dared the AAP to get him disqualified.

Aam Aadmi Party, today urged the Assembly Speaker, Rana K P Singh, to extend the forthcoming budget session.
AAP leader Kanwar Sandhu sought at least 15 sittings during the session.
The session is slated till March 28,
As per Sandhu it is expected to have six or seven sittings only due to a holiday and the week-end between the duration of the session,
Kharar MLA said ,Leader of Opposition, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, also demanded that the Session be extended to the second week of April.
The AAP MLA said that Punjab was today facing a “severe crisis” forcing the people to head for foreign countries.
“Future generations would not forgive us for neglecting the vital issues plaguing the state. These can be addressed only through discussion and debate and not by pushing them under the carpet,” Sandhu said.
On behalf of the AAP, Kanwar Sandhu listed out 11 issues in its “business of the party” which included the state of Punjab’s finances, the Congress party’s manifesto, farm debt and joblessness.

Sources said after his talks with AAP And Congress “failed”, Sidhu decided to float the outfit along with some like-minded people and held a meeting with suspended Akali legislator from Jalandhar, Pargat Singh, and Bains brothers of Ludhiana – Simarjeet Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains, both of whom won as independent legislators.
The AAP, which has made it a triangular contest in Punjab by giving a tough fight to ruling Akali-BJP combine and Congress, was taken aback by the development as there were talks of Sidhu joining the party after deserting the BJP.
Sidhu had in mid-August met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence and discussed with him his plans of joining the AAP. Kejriwal on August 19 said the cricketer- turned-politician just needs “time to think” and that Sidhu “has not put any pre-condition”, a reference to speculation that Sidhu wanted to be the chief ministerial face of AAP.
Posters showing a photograph of Sidhu, Pargat and Bains brothers together were today posted by the front’s leaders that said the four have joined hands for the politics of hope and faith.
