The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today denounced the decision of the government to allow 49 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in Air India, and said it was aimed at expediting the privatisation of the national carrier.
CITU general secretary Tapan Sen said today.”Actually, this is nothing but complete foreignisation of the national carrier – a public sector company with its huge asset base and a high-revenue earning international service network,”
The CITU has called upon the working class to build up a determined resistance against “such deliberate exercise” towards degeneration of the national economy and people’s livelihood both through sectoral and nationwide united struggle.

[New Delhi]Govt Relaxes Its Gripes Over Air India:49 % FDI Allowed
Modi government today relaxed FDI norms in various sectors such as single brand retail and allowed foreign airlines to invest up to 49 per cent in Air India. The decision was taken during the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . The Cabinet allowed overseas investors to invest 100 per cent FDI (foreign direct investment) in single brand retail trading and construction development without any government approval,
. “Foreign airlines allowed to invest up to 49 per cent under approval route in Air India,” the statement said. As per the policy, foreign airlines are allowed to invest under government approval route in Indian companies operating scheduled and non-scheduled air transport services, up to the limit of 49 per cent of their paid-up capital. However, the provision was not applicable to Air India, thereby implying that foreign airlines could not invest in Air India. “It has now been decided to do away with this restriction and allow foreign airlines to invest up to 49 per cent under approval route in Air India,”

As per RTI applicant Commodore (retd) Lokesh Batra ,PMO on January 30 uploaded on its website the details of bills worth about Rs 119.70 crore cleared for eight trips, which were shown pending or under process since last year.
The move comes following an order of Chief Information Commissioner R K Mathur who had refused to disclose the file notings related to the travel expenses incurred on the Prime Minister’s visits abroad, but took note of Batra’s quest for timely payment of bills by the government to the public sector units.
The PMO has claimed on its website that bills for trips – Japan, Laos, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya and Uzbekistan – have not been received while it shows that bills are under process for the four visits.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has undertaken 27 visits abroad since assuming the office on May 26, 2014, according to the PMO website

National carrier Air India has seen revenues from tickets booked through mobile devices jump nearly three-fold since the re-launch of its mobile application in October.
Air India was raking in daily revenues to the tune of Rs 10-12 lakh from the tickets booked through mobile devices.
With the launch of the mobile application, the amount has rose nearly three-fold to Rs 36 lakh per day, a senior official said.
“We have seen this uptick in the last nearly one and a half months following the re-launch of our mobile app in October,” Air India Finance Director Vinod Hejmadi said at SITA’s two-day 2016 Aviation ICT forum
As per estimates, more than one billion Indians use a mobile phone and out of them around 300 million regularly use them to access Internet.
In October, Air India carried 11.25 lakh passengers domestically and had a market share of 13%

The crew member, who was intending to depart to New York, was intercepted by the customs officials yesterday. On his personal and baggage search, 300 bottles of ‘Phensedyl new cough Linctus 50 ml’ were allegedly recovered.
The cough syrup contains banned substance ‘codeine phosphate’, which is commonly used by drug addicts,

The cough syrup is not expensive and is sold around Rs 60 per bottle in retail market. The codeine-based syrups are in great demands in some countries among drug addicts as they are psychotropic,

2.5 kg of gold jewellery concealed in a toilet of an Air India flight, which today arrived at Goa airport from Dubai, was seized by the Customs and Central Excise officials.
The flight left for Bengaluru from Goa after the Customs officials completed their formalities.
This is the third such instance of unclaimed gold being found in Air India flight which arrived from Dubai to Goa this year,

[Mumbai]National Carrier AI Diverts Mumbai-Newark Flight to Kazakhstan
A Newark-bound Air India flight, carrying around 300 passengers, from here was today diverted to Kazakhstan due to technical issues.
The Boeing 777-300 ER plane landed at an international airport in Kazakhstan at around 0800 hours after “some alarm went off”.
In a tweet, the airline said the flight has been diverted on account of operational reasons and that all passengers are being taken care of.
Generally, Boeing 777-300 ER has seating capacity for around 350 people

Domestic air passenger traffic jumped by nearly 26 per cent in July, registering double-digit growth for the 24th consecutive month with lower fares attracting more fliers.
IndiGo saw its market share climb to 39.8 per cent It had a market share of 37.9 per cent in June.
Latest data from aviation regulator DGCA showed that local airlines flew
85.08 lakh passengers in July compared to
67.62 lakh fliers recorded in the year-ago period.
This is the 24th straight month that domestic air traffic has registered high double-digit growth, which also comes against the backdrop of many airlines offering lower fares as they compete to attract more passengers.
In terms of market share in July,
IndiGo [39.8%]
Jet Airways (16.3%),
Air India (14.8 %),
SpiceJet (11.7%),
GoAir (8.4 %),
Vistara (2.6 %) and
AirAsia (2.2%).
When it comes to load factor — a measure of seat occupancy in flights — low-cost carrier
SpiceJet emerged on top with 92 %in July. The same stood at 93 % in June.
During July,
IndiGo’s load factor stood at 83.6 % higher than 77.9 % seen in the previous month.
Among other airlines,
GoAir registered a load factor of 90.3 % followed by Air Asia with 85.7 % while that of
Jet Airways and Vistara were 83.8 % and 75.2 % respectively.
National carrier Air India registered a lower load factor of 80.3 %in July compared to 82 % in June.
Scheduled domestic airlines shelled out compensation to the tune of Rs 35.56 lakh for denied boarding to passengers last month.
For cancellations, the carriers gave a total
compensation of Rs 23.22 lakh while the overall amount for
flight delays, a total amount of Rs 61.33 lakh was given “towards compensation and facilities”.
According to DGCA, 1,111 passengers were affected by
denied boarding, 4,796 people by cancellations and
delays impacted 65,953 passengers.
Last month, as many as 948 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines with maximum number coming against Air Pegasus — which saw disruptions in its operations amid financial woes.
As much as 34.2 % complaints were related to flight problems, followed by customer service (27.4 %) and baggage (17.5%).
