Shortly after the Punjab Assembly passed a resolution by voice vote against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday said his government like Kerala will approach the Supreme Court on the issue.
He said the Centre will have to make the necessary amendments to the CAA if it has to be implemented in Punjab and other states opposing the legislation.
“Like Kerala, our government will also approach the Supreme Court on the issue,” Singh told reporters in an informal chat outside the state Assembly.
In response to a question, the chief minister made it clear that the Census 2021 will be conducted on the old parameters in Punjab.
The new factors added by the Centre for the purpose of the National Population Register (NPR) will not be included, he added.
The Punjab Assembly passed the resolution by voice vote against the CAA, the second state after Kerala to do so.
Ruling Congress and the main opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supported the resolution, the BJP opposed it.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sought inclusion of Muslims in the list of communities that could be granted citizenship under the amended law.
The CAA provides for granting citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, who had migrated to India before December 31, 2014, from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It excludes members of the Muslim community.

The AAP on Thursday demanded that the Congress led government in Punjab call a special session of the Assembly to adopt a resolution against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The main opposition party in the state also urged Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.
AAP legislator and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema said the chief minister should immediately convene an all-party meeting and also decide upon calling a special session of Vidhan Sabha in order to adopt a resolution against the CAA as done by the Kerala Assembly.

संशोधित नागरिकता कानून (#सीएए) के खिलाफ प्रदर्शन के दौरान हुई हिंसा के मामलों की जांच के लिए बुधवार को विशेष जांच दल (एसआईटी) का गठन किया गया है।
कानपुर रेंज के पुलिस महानिरीक्षक मोहित अग्रवाल के अनुसार #एसआईटी का नेतृत्व अपर पुलिस अधीक्षक (अपराध शाखा) करेंगे। इसमें पांच पुलिस अधिकारी शामिल होंगे।
एसआईटी को चार मामले हस्तांतरित कर दिये गये हैं, जिनमें तीन मामले बेकनगंज थाने के और एक मामला बाबूपुरवा थाने का है।

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati on Sunday fired a fresh salvo at Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad and accused him of affecting the party votes.
Mayawati wondered why Aazad, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was participating in the protests outside Jama Masjid in Delhi instead of doing it in the state.
“This is because assembly election is around the corner here (in Delhi),” Mayawati said in a series of tweets.
The Dalits are of the view that Bhim Army’s Chandrashekhar is playing at the hands of the rival parties, and as a part of conspiracy, when the polls are around the corner, he stages protest and then goes to jail to affect the party’s votes in states where BSP is strong,
The BSP leader appealed to her party workers to be cautious of “such selfish elements, organisations and parties”.
“Such elements are never inducted into the party no matter how efforts they make,” she said.

The National Sikh Front (NSF), which advocates the cause of Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday batted strongly for implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), saying it will particularly benefit minorities from Afghanistan.
It said people, including students, are being misguided to trigger countrywide protests.
“We fully support this Act. It is beneficial for the minorities (of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh),” NSF chairman Varinderjeet Singh told reporters here.
Singh called for implementation of the CAA in letter and spirit across the country and said students and some sections of people are being misguided.
“It does not affect any minority community but instead gives justice to them. But some people are being misled,” he said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a dharna at the India Gate on Monday in solidarity with students protesting against the amended Citizenship Act.
Two-hour protest, began at 4 pm, is to express solidarity with students from Jamia Millia Islamia University and other places.
Police had used force against students on Sunday after a protest against the amended law turned violent in which buses were torched.
