The Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), a 270-year-old service, has asked the government to change its name to Defence Finance Service, keeping in view the changing nature of the department.
The nature of functioning of the department has changed over the last so many years. Time has come to change the name of the department from Defence Accounts Department to Defence Finance Department.
“We have sent the proposal finally (to the government) to change the name of the Defence Accounts Service to Defence Finance Service,” Sunil Kohli, Controller General of Defence Accounts, said.
He was speaking at an event to mark the 270th Defence Accounts Service Day which was also attended by Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar.
IDAS officers are group ‘A’ defence civilian officers.
The department also serves the three defence services, DRDO, Border Roads Organisation and ordnance factories. It renders three fold services in areas like financial advise, payments, accounting and audit.
It traces its history to 1747, from the days of the British East India Company, and is one of the oldest civil services in the country.
The IDAS played a critical role in the implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP).
Kohli said the department has also sent another proposal to earmark budget which could be used for carrying out digitilisation and computerisation of the department in order to implement pensions in a better way.

IAF Received Shot in Arm by Launch of e-audit Initiative at PCDA[AF] in Dehradun
The Integrated Material Management Online System (IMMOLS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) received a shot in the arm by the launch of the e-audit initiative at the PCDA[AF]in Dehradun,
The audit function of IMMOLS, which had hitherto not been digitised, was launched formally by Shri Arvind Kaushal,[IDAS] Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) along with Shri AN Saxena, Addl CGDA (IT).
Air Marshal Sukhchain Singh , Air Officer-in-charge Maintenance (AOM) with Air Vice Marshal RP George, Asst Chief of Air Staff (ACAS) (Logistics) and the team of officers from Directorate of IMMOLS, Air Headquarters. The software partner M/s Tata Consultancy Services was represented by Shri KV Narayanan.
The digitisation of the audit function is a huge step in the direction of enhancing transparency and probity in various functions related to stores, financing and accounting of the logistics chain management system of the IAF. The digitised system has now replaced the manual system of originating vouchers and sending them through mail to PCDA [AF]Dehradun. Now the entire information and data required by these offices for audit would be made available on the digital medium at all times.
The two key offices of Defences audit i.e the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts, Air Force (PCDA, AF) Dehradun and the Joint Controller of Defence Accounts (JCDA), Nagpur have now been provided online connectivity with the IMMOLS system of IAF.
The Defence Accounts Department (DAD) which has lived through more than two and half centuries is one of the oldest departments under the Government of India. The Defence Accounts Department (DAD) which is headed by Controller General of Defence Accounts(CGDA) is at present responsible for the Financial Advice, Payments, Accounting and Internal Audit of the Expenditure and Receipts of the Defence Services and other Defence-related Organizations

The Defence Accounts Department (DAD), celebrated its 267th Annual Day at Controller General Of Defence Accounts[CGDA] Training & Development Centre (CENTRAD), Brar Square today.
Inaugurating the event, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan commended the dedication and professionalism of DAD personnel in providing prudent financial advice and adding in the management of the Defence Budget.
On this occasion, Admiral Dhowan, presented the “Raksha Mantri Awards for Excellence” to DAD employees selected for their outstanding contributions during 2013-2014.
The team of PCDA (Pensions), Allahabad headed by Shri S. Murali Krishnan from the office of CGDA and Shri C.B Yadav, from PCDA (Pensions) was conferred the award for e-initiatives in the area of Pension Sanction and e-scrolls based pension accounting.
The team of CDA Chennai headed by Shri V. Sampath, was conferred the award for the development of a new web based and more robust office automation software ‘SUGAM’. The team CGDA HQrs & CDA (Funds) Meerut was awarded for their IT initiatives in streamlining the maintenance of Provident Fund accounts of more than 2.3 lakh Defence Civilians, through Project ‘NIDHI’
