The opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today called the job fair organised by the Punjab government “bogus” and asked the Congress-led regime to publish a list of youth who were given jobs during the last one year.
In a statement here, former minister and SAD spokesman Maheshinder Singh Grewal said the government was making a laughing stock of itself by claiming that 31,000 youth had been given jobs in yesterday’s “so-called” job fair.
“What has actually happened is that the government has taken credit by distributing appointment letters to youth who have already been given employment by the private sector.
Besides, the government has also handed appointment letters to contractual employees who are already employed by it to swell the figures.
We demand immediate publication of complete list of all youth given employment in these bogus job fairs along with their addresses as well as emoluments being drawn by them,” he added.
Speaking about the foundation stones laid by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh at Ludhiana yesterday, Grewal said it did not behove of the CM to try to take credit for projects which had been initiated by the previous SAD-BJP government.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal today expelled Iqbal Singh Sandhu, ex-member of the SAD core committee and senior leader of the Tarn Taran district from the party over anti-party activities.

Mohali Mayor and real estate developer Kulwant Singh, who was expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal last year, today rejoined the party here in the presence of party’s President and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Addressing the media, Sukhbir said he regards Singh as his younger brother “who for a little while went away from the party fold but has now returned to his mother party which would further strengthen it in district Mohali.”
Describing Singh as a “dynamic” leader, Sukhbir said he carried out an “all-round development” in Mohali and helped it to occupy a top position among the tri-cities of Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh.
Singh (55) was expelled from SAD following differences with the then party leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia over ticket distribution for municipal corporation elections.
After his expulsion, he formed Azaad group and contested elections and subsequently became Mayor of Mohali.
Singh, a leading real estate developer in Mohali, had also unsuccessfully contested 2012 assembly polls on a SAD ticket from Fatehgarh Sahib seat.
Twelve other municipal councillors, including Amrik Singh, Phoolraj Singh, Harpal Singh Channa, Sarabjit Singh, also joined Akali Dal today

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today said 200 skill development centers would be opened across the state to make the youth as employment generators not the job seekers.
Elaborating the plans of Punjab government to ensure all round development of the state, he said the government would open 2 skill development centers in every block of border districts, where the youth would be imparted free training in various streams to increase their avenues for self-employment.
The youth would contribute to the state’s development as also to their own family by being self employed with increase in resources, the Dy CM said.
Addressing a gathering at Shaheed Lieutenant Navdeep Singh (Ashoka Chakra) Sports stadium on the eve of inauguration of automated driving test track centre constructed at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore by state transport department, he said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has vision and farsightedness to empower the youth.
He also informed that every center would see the 1,000 youth passing out taking the total number of annual pass outs to more than 1.50 lakh fully skilled and trained youth.
He said that the state government would provide jobs to 1,20,000 youth of the state through a transparent process.
Terming ‘Kohinoor’ diamond an inseparable part of cultural heritage of the state, SAD president said that every effort would be made to bring this precious diamond back to Punjab and the matter would be pursued with the Centre.
He also said SGPC has been asked to file a petition in the Supreme Court in this regard.
Badal said the state government has formulated a policy to give interest free cash crop loans of Rs 50,000 to the farmers.
“Farmers’ tubewell bills have also been waived off for which the state government pays Rs 6,000 crore from its own coffers to the Powercom,” he said.
Launching a scathing attack on Congress, he said the Congress created unnecessary noise on the issue of cash credit limit (CCL) for purchase of foodgrains and misguided the public on this issue but it has been given a befitting reply with the announcing of CCL to Punjab which has amply proved that Congress wanted to delay the loans just to malign SAD-BJP government and score political brownie points.
Attacking Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he said its so called formula of governance, if any, has miserably failed in Delhi and now it has set its eyes on Punjab with next year’s Assembly elections in mind.

Talking to media after addressing the political conference organised to mark the Martyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Khatkar Kalan, Sukhbir said that his party would soon write to the Centre to award ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Bhagat Singh.
Speaking in Ferozepur, Sukhbir advocated ‘Bharat Ratna’ for Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh, saying it will be a real tribute to the great martyr.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh today rubbished the state government’s claim that its revenue has improved during the last nine years of SAD+BJP Rule and termed them as “false and baseless”.

The state government has been giving out full-page advertisements in vernacular and English dailies for the past few days claiming Punjab’s finances are sound and revenue has increased in the past nine years.
Referring to Sukhbir Badal’s claim of having increased state’s revenue as compared to the Congress regime’s (between 2002 and 2007), Amarinder said the SAD-BJP government has increased VAT by several times – ranging between 6-15 per cent – on many items, compared to two percent during his (Amarinder’s) rule.
“The fact of the matter is the development has come to a standstill and the rates of land have fallen by more than 70 per cent and still Sukhbir will try to make people believe that all is well,” he said.
He said the main source of revenue is manufacturing amd claimed it has gone down during the last nine years as most of the industries in Punjab have either shut down or shifted out
