The university teachers had earlier rallied behind its protesting students and questioned the administration’s decision to allow the police crackdown on the campus even as they appealed to the public not to “brand” the institution as “anti-national” but they had not joined the strike earlier.
Teachers’ bodies of 40 central universities and Pune-based FTII had also come out in support of the agitating students, saying it is an issue of “indiscipline” and not “sedition”.
Over 400 academicians from international varsities, including Columbia, Yale, Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, SOAS, University of Toronto, McGill, King’s College, University of California, Berkeley and New York University have also expressed solidarity with JNU students

[Pune,]FTII Students Call Off 139-day Strike, protests still on
Agitating students of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India today unilaterally called off their 139-day-old strike, but made it clear their protest against appointment of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as its chairman will continue.
They also ruled out any “proactive engagement” with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry until the issue of appointment of Chauhan, best known for his role of Yudhishthir in teleserial Mahabharata, and four other FTII society members, gets resolved.
FTII Students Association (FSA) representative Vikas Urs said the students have taken a collective decision to go back to academics with “immediate effect” in the best interest of the fraternity.
Referring to FSA’s talks with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which could not end the stalemate, Urs said the ministry conveyed the impression that it had no mandate to take a decision in the matter.

[Pune]Students Gheraoed Director So They Faced Police Also In The Campus:FTII Unrest
Police ,On 17 August, stormed the premises of FTII to disperse a group of striking students who had gheraoed director Prashant Pathrabe, protesting against “irrational and unjustified” assessment of the incomplete diploma projects.
Tension prevailed in the campus as about 40 students gheraoed Pathrabe in his office this evening, refusing to leave unless he gave a “rational” explanation for the ongoing assessment by the faculty of the incomplete films made by the 2008 batch.
When contacted, Pathrabe had told PTI earlier in the evening that he had been gheraoed by the students, but was “safe”.
A students’ representative said they had “stopped” the director in his office since he had “decided to go on with unfair assessment of the incomplete film projects”.
The FTII Students’ Association (FSA) has alleged that the assessment was politically motivated and aimed at getting rid of about 50 inmates belonging to the 2008 batch on the ground of “overstaying” due to incomplete projects.
The students, according to a communication from the association, tried to contact I&B ministry’s joint secretary to seek his intervention but received no response.
Pathrabe has maintained that he was following the ministry’s dictates in going ahead with the assessment.
The strike by FTII students against the appointment of BJP member and TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of FTII society entered 68th day today.
[New Delhi]Rahul Gandhi Ups Attack on FTII Issue,May Approach To The President
Stepping up attack on the FTII issue, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today accused RSS of capturing educational institutions built on merit in the last six decades to destroy them.
Congress sources said he would lead a delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee to seek his intervention over the ongoing students’s stir against the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
Rahul who had earlier also visited FTII to support the demand of the students who want Chauhan to be removed.
“The capturing of educational institutions by the RSS is a political issue. I am not politicising it. The BJP is politicising it.
“Every institution that has been developed over the last 50-60 years on merit is being destroyed. This is a political issue not a social issue,” the Congress Vice President said.
Students’ agitation at FTII is going on for nearly two months after government announced the appointment of Chauhan as head of its governing council.
The students have been boycotting classes since June 12, demanding Chauhan’s removal, maintaining that he lacks “academic credentials, vision and stature” to head the premier institute.
[Pune,22 JULY] Government Dares FTII Agitating Students To End Stir For Talks Govt Today Made It Clear That There Will be no Talks Unless Students Withdraw the Stir.
As the strike by the students entered the 41st day today, the Film and Television Institute of India(FTII) Students’ Association (FSA) announced that they will stage a protest demonstration along with “like-minded people” in New Delhi on August 3 coinciding with the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The students, who are demanding that the appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as Chairman of FTII Governing Council be revoked, said that the message they got from the Institute authorities was that there will be no rethink on the government’s decision.
Through the demonstration, the students hope to draw the attention of MPs from various political parties towards the Government’s “insensitive” approach to their demands and seek their intervention.
Briefing the media about their interaction with the new Director of FTII Prashant Pathrabe, representatives of the FSA said the message from the Ministry conveyed to them through him was that “there will be no talks till the stir is withdrawn and also no rethink on Chauhan’s appointment”.
The message from the I&B Ministry is that “there will be no revocation of Chauhan’s appointment or reconstitution of the FTII Society (the main demands of the agitating students).
FSA spokesman Vikas Urs said, “The Government has shown complete disdain by not engaging in a meaningful dialogue with the students over their demands.”
