The university teachers had earlier rallied behind its protesting students and questioned the administration’s decision to allow the police crackdown on the campus even as they appealed to the public not to “brand” the institution as “anti-national” but they had not joined the strike earlier.
Teachers’ bodies of 40 central universities and Pune-based FTII had also come out in support of the agitating students, saying it is an issue of “indiscipline” and not “sedition”.

40 Students Gheraoed Director So They Faced Police Also In The Campus: FTII Tension

[Pune]Students Gheraoed Director So They Faced Police Also In The Campus:FTII Unrest
Police ,On 17 August, stormed the premises of FTII to disperse a group of striking students who had gheraoed director Prashant Pathrabe, protesting against “irrational and unjustified” assessment of the incomplete diploma projects.
Tension prevailed in the campus as about 40 students gheraoed Pathrabe in his office this evening, refusing to leave unless he gave a “rational” explanation for the ongoing assessment by the faculty of the incomplete films made by the 2008 batch.
When contacted, Pathrabe had told PTI earlier in the evening that he had been gheraoed by the students, but was “safe”.
A students’ representative said they had “stopped” the director in his office since he had “decided to go on with unfair assessment of the incomplete film projects”.
The FTII Students’ Association (FSA) has alleged that the assessment was politically motivated and aimed at getting rid of about 50 inmates belonging to the 2008 batch on the ground of “overstaying” due to incomplete projects.
The students, according to a communication from the association, tried to contact I&B ministry’s joint secretary to seek his intervention but received no response.
Pathrabe has maintained that he was following the ministry’s dictates in going ahead with the assessment.
The strike by FTII students against the appointment of BJP member and TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of FTII society entered 68th day today.

Rahul Gandhi Ups Attack on FTII Issue,May Approach To The President

[New Delhi]Rahul Gandhi Ups Attack on FTII Issue,May Approach To The President
Stepping up attack on the FTII issue, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today accused RSS of capturing educational institutions built on merit in the last six decades to destroy them.
Congress sources said he would lead a delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee to seek his intervention over the ongoing students’s stir against the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
Rahul who had earlier also visited FTII to support the demand of the students who want Chauhan to be removed.
“The capturing of educational institutions by the RSS is a political issue. I am not politicising it. The BJP is politicising it.
“Every institution that has been developed over the last 50-60 years on merit is being destroyed. This is a political issue not a social issue,” the Congress Vice President said.
Students’ agitation at FTII is going on for nearly two months after government announced the appointment of Chauhan as head of its governing council.
The students have been boycotting classes since June 12, demanding Chauhan’s removal, maintaining that he lacks “academic credentials, vision and stature” to head the premier institute.
