FTII Mahabharat Part 2 Starts,Standoff Between Police,Students Amid Protest

[Pune,Maharashtra]FTII Mahabharat Part 2 Starts,Standoff Between Police,Students Shouted “Gajendra Chauhan Go Back
Police ,Today, used force to disperse and round up a group of about 40 FTII students protesting against TV actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan who is expected to take charge as the institute’s Chairman today.
Notwithstanding a warning issued by police yesterday to maintain peace on the eve of the first meeting of the new FTII Society headed by Chauhan, members of FTII Students Federation (FSA) staged a protest demonstration at the institute’s gate shouting “Gajendra Chauhan go back” which led to a scuffle between the students and police.”We have been brutally targeted by police who lathi-charged us with the knowledge of FTII administration,” alleged one of the students as he was put in a police van and whisked away.
The students of the prestigious institution here were on a strike opposing Chauhan’s appointment since June 12 last year and called it off on October 28 and returned to the classes.
An FSA representative Vikas Urs said, “We had withdrawn the strike but we have not given up our resistance to the wrong appointments. Police have attacked on our peaceful protesters in connivance with the FTII administration. Our protest will continue”.”We had asked the students to demonstrate peacefully but we had to use force because they wanted to block the way to the institute and therefore we had to detain them. We used minimum force,” said Tushar Joshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police who was on the spot.
The FSA has alleged that Chauhan lacks stature to head the FTII.A tough posture by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which steadfastly refused to accept the FSA demand for removal of Chauhan, a crackdown on some students and their arrest subsequent to gherao of the institute director Prashant Pathrabe ultimately saw the long drawn out agitation by students fizzle out last year as they returned to academics.
Meanwhile, the first meeting of FTII Society scheduled to be held today at the campus, is likely to be attended among others by Anagha Ghaisas, Rahul Solapurkar, Shailesh Gupta and Narendra Pathak — the members whose appointments have been objected by the FSA for being political and allegedly lacking in merit and stature for the post.

[Pune,]FTII Students Call Off 139-day Strike, protests still on
Agitating students of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India today unilaterally called off their 139-day-old strike, but made it clear their protest against appointment of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as its chairman will continue.
They also ruled out any “proactive engagement” with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry until the issue of appointment of Chauhan, best known for his role of Yudhishthir in teleserial Mahabharata, and four other FTII society members, gets resolved.
FTII Students Association (FSA) representative Vikas Urs said the students have taken a collective decision to go back to academics with “immediate effect” in the best interest of the fraternity.
Referring to FSA’s talks with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which could not end the stalemate, Urs said the ministry conveyed the impression that it had no mandate to take a decision in the matter.

Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor is the latest celebrity to come out in support of FTII students, who are agitating against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the premier institute.
In a black and white video, posted by FTII students body on YouTube, Ranbir, 32, makes a plea to the authorities to pay heed to the students’ demands, initiate a dialogue with them and address their grievances.
Calling FTII the breeding place of “many filmmakers, cinematographers, editors, award winning personalities”, Ranbir says, “I think it gives an opportunity to a person without any film connection who come from various parts of the country. I think people look at a graduate from FTII with so much respect… and hearing about all the things that are happening now, the appointing of a new chairman which has gone against the students’ wishes.
He said “I think it is only fair that students deserve a fair hearing of what they want, all they require is an aspirational figure to look up to somebody with a large body of work, (if) not large body of work but a body of work that they can aspire or they can be inspired from,” Ranbir says in the video.
Chauhan, best known for playing Yudhisthira on TV epic “Mahabharata”, took over as the chairman of the Pune-based institute’s governing council last month. His appointment was heavily criticised by current and former students of Film and Television Institute of India.
FTII students have been boycotting classes, abandoning academic work in protest against the appointment of Chauhan, who they allege lacks “stature and vision” to head the institution.
