Former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi was on Monday unanimously elected as leader of the BJP Legislative Party.
Marandi had on February 17 merged his Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) (JVM-P) party with the BJP at a formal merger ceremony in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah
MLAs elected their leader on the call of the party’s central observer Muralidhar Rao.
In all, 25 BJP MLAs were present.
Marandi headed the first BJP government in the state in 2000.
He, however, quit the party following differences with the party leadership and floated JVM-P in 2006.
The saffron party had not elected its Legislative Party leader after the state polls in November-December last year.
With the arrival of Marandi, the BJP’s number has swelled to 26 in the Jharkhand Assembly.
The ruling JMM-Congress-RJD has a combined strength of 47 in the House.

BJP’s national spokesman and senior journalist M J Akbar today won the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Jharkhand, defeating Haji Hussain Ansari of the JMM by 19 votes.
“Seventy-eight out of a total 80 voters cast their votes.One vote was found invalid, leaving a total of 77 votes,” Returning officer Sushil Kumar Singh told PTI.”M J Akbar who got 48 votes was declared winner while Haji Hussain Ansari got 29 votes,”
The 82-member House has one vacant seat and a nominated MLA who doesn’t have the voting right.
Two MLAs, Anosh Ekka of Jharkhand Party and Nav Jawan Sangharsh Morcha legislator Bhanu Pratap Singh, did not exercise their franchise, Assembly
The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of K D Singh after he joined Trinamool Congress. He had won with the backing of JMM. The term will expire next year
