Modi Govt’s Gems Swaraj And Mahesh Discussed Famed Kohinoor Diamond

[New Delhi] Modi Govt’s Gems Swaraj And Mahesh Discussed Kohinoor Diamond Issue
The issue of bringing back the famed Kohinoor diamond from Britain was today discussed at a meeting attended by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma.
The meeting lasted for over 45 minutes and issues relating to the 108-carat diamond which is currently set in a crown on display in the Tower of London were discussed,
In April, the government had made a submission in the Supreme Court that the diamond was neither “forcibly taken nor stolen” by the British, but given as a “gift” to the East India Company by the Then rulers of Punjab.
Bringing back of the diamond faces legal and technical hurdles as it dates back to pre-Independence period and thus did not fall under the purview of Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
However, after receiving flak for its stand, the government had said all efforts would be made to get back the diamond estimated to cost over USD 200 million.
Kohinoor, meaning mountain of light, is a large, colourless diamond that was found in southern India in early 14th century.
In May, Sharma had told Parliament that Ministry of External Affairs is exploring ways and means for obtaining a satisfactory resolution to this issue with the UK government.
The Kohinoor is the subject of a historic ownership dispute and has been claimed by at least four countries, including India.

Parliamentarians Strongly Demand Prestigious “Kohinoor”Back

[New Delhi]Parliamentarians strongly Demand Prestigious+Precious Kohinoor Back
BJD member in Lok Sabha today, got instant support from several members including those from the Akali Dal.
On this issue
Bhartruhari Mahtab,in Zero Hour, dismissed the talk that the diamond was given as a gift to the British and insisted that it was taken by them as forcibly from Duleep Singh, son of noted Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Mahtab said the situation in which the diamond went to the British after the 1849 Ango-Sikh war was vividly described in a letter written by the British political agent stationed in Lahore to Governor General Lord Dalhousie.
Noting that Kohinoor was the prestige of the nation, he said the way it had gone to the Queen of England was an “act of cheating” and a “surrender under duress”.
He said the British had committed untold plunder during the colonial rule.
He said the Maharaja wanted to donate the diamond to the Puri temple like he had made gifts to the Golden Temple and Kashi Vishwanath temple.
Making a strong plea, he said the calligraphic material detailing the situation under which the diamond was taken away should be retrieved by the government from archieves.
He claimed that Kohinoor was the ‘syamantak mani’ associated with Lord Krishna.
Mahtab said India should impress upon the U K to give the diamond back notwithstanding their Prime Minister’s statement that the British Museums and treasury would be empty if it returned all its treasures.
In an obvious reference to Vijay Mallya, he recalled that the sword of Tipu Sultan was brought back to the country from the “tainted money of a liquor baron whose passport has recently been revoked.”
Prem Singh Chandumajra (SAD) attacked the Culture Ministry for its stand in the Supreme Court and wanted steps to bring it back. He wanted the House to pass a unanimous resolution in this regard.
Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM) remarked that Kohinoor came from the Golconda mines which fall in his constituency.
Meenakshi Lekhi (BJP) said the government has not taken any stand on the issue of return of Kohinoor and whatever has appeared in the media is wrong.

SAD Led Punjab to Start 200 skill development centers

[Gurdaspur, Punjab] SAD Led Punjab to Start 200 skill development centers
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today said 200 skill development centers would be opened across the state to make the youth as employment generators not the job seekers.
Elaborating the plans of Punjab government to ensure all round development of the state, he said the government would open 2 skill development centers in every block of border districts, where the youth would be imparted free training in various streams to increase their avenues for self-employment.
The youth would contribute to the state’s development as also to their own family by being self employed with increase in resources, the Dy CM said.
Addressing a gathering at Shaheed Lieutenant Navdeep Singh (Ashoka Chakra) Sports stadium on the eve of inauguration of automated driving test track centre constructed at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore by state transport department, he said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has vision and farsightedness to empower the youth.
He also informed that every center would see the 1,000 youth passing out taking the total number of annual pass outs to more than 1.50 lakh fully skilled and trained youth.
He said that the state government would provide jobs to 1,20,000 youth of the state through a transparent process.
Terming ‘Kohinoor’ diamond an inseparable part of cultural heritage of the state, SAD president said that every effort would be made to bring this precious diamond back to Punjab and the matter would be pursued with the Centre.
He also said SGPC has been asked to file a petition in the Supreme Court in this regard.
Badal said the state government has formulated a policy to give interest free cash crop loans of Rs 50,000 to the farmers.
“Farmers’ tubewell bills have also been waived off for which the state government pays Rs 6,000 crore from its own coffers to the Powercom,” he said.
Launching a scathing attack on Congress, he said the Congress created unnecessary noise on the issue of cash credit limit (CCL) for purchase of foodgrains and misguided the public on this issue but it has been given a befitting reply with the announcing of CCL to Punjab which has amply proved that Congress wanted to delay the loans just to malign SAD-BJP government and score political brownie points.
Attacking Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he said its so called formula of governance, if any, has miserably failed in Delhi and now it has set its eyes on Punjab with next year’s Assembly elections in mind.

SC Demands Centre’s Clarification On Prestigious+Precious Kohinoor

[New Delhi]SC Asks Centre’s Clarification On Prestigious+Precious Kohinoor.Court Says Everyone Is Demanding Kohinoor But Govt Shows Ignorance
The Supreme Court asked the government to clarify its stand on a PIL seeking return of Kohinoor diamond in the country.
A bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur, which did not issue notice on the PIL, asked the Solicitor General to seek instructions in the matter within a week.
“Everybody is claiming the Kohinoor. How many countries are claiming Kohinoor? Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and even South Africa. Somebody here is also asking for the Kohinoor.
Do you know about it,” the bench asked the Solicitor General.
Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said he was unaware about it and would need time to seek instructions and get back.
During the hearing, the bench, also comprising Justices R Banumathi and U U Lalit, said there has been a press report attributing statements to the British Prime Minister quoting him as saying, “if we were to accept such demands, British Museums would be empty”.
“Why don’t you approach the government? Hasn’t the government taken up the matter? Government has done something.
They have done whatever it could,” the bench told the petitioner.
The apex court was hearing a PIL filed by All India Human Rights & Social Justice Front seeking directions to the High Commissioner of United Kingdom for return of the diamond besides several other treasures.
The PIL has made Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Culture, High Commissioners of UK, Pakistan and Bangladesh as parties in the case.
It has also sought return of the “ring and talwar of Tipu Sultan and other treasures of Tipu Sultan, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Rani of Jhansi, Nawab Mir Ahmad Ali Banda and other rulers of India.
