(Mumbai)Hostels in Maha Varsities to be named Matoshree
Higher and technical education Minister Uday Samant on Friday said upcoming student hostels in state-run universities will be named ‘Matoshree’ and the existing ones may also be renamed.
‘Matoshree’ happens to be the name of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in suburban Bandra here.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said he will be exploring the possibility of renaming the existing hostels as ‘Matoshree, as these facilities offer students shelter like their own mothers.
The minister on Friday inaugurated the hostel of Kavi Kulguru Sanskrit University in Ramtek, which was named as ‘Matoshree’ by the chancellor of the university.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appeared before a Nagpur court on Thursday in connection with a complaint seeking criminal proceedings against him for alleged non-disclosure of criminal cases in his election affidavit in 2014.
The senior BJP leader was given the last chance by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate P S Ingle to appear before the court on Thursday.
Taking note of Fadnavis’ appearance before the court, the magistrate granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 15,000.
Fadnavis was granted exemption from appearance on four earlier occasions since November 2019.
The court has now posted the matter for further hearing on March 30.

शिवसेना नेता संजय राउत ने पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी की गैंगस्टर करीम लाला से मुलाकात वाली अपनी टिप्पणी गुरुवार को वापस ले ली।
राउत ने हालांकि अपना बयान वापस लेने से पहले कहा था कि मुम्बई के इतिहास की समझ ना रखने वालों ने उनके बयान को ‘‘तोड़-मरोड़’’ डाला और करीम लाला पठान समुदाय का प्रतिनिधि करते थे इसलिए गांधी ने उनसे मुलाकात की थी।
कांग्रेस नेता मिलिंद देवड़ा और संजय निरुपम ने राउत के बयान की निंदा की और उनसे बयान वापस लेने की मांग भी की थी।
राउत ने बयान वापस लेते हुए कहा, ‘‘ अगर किसी को लगता है कि मेरे बयान से इंदिरा गांधी की छवि को नुकसान पहुंचा या किसी की भावनाएं आहत हुईं, तो मैं उसे वापस लेता हूं।’’
राज्यसभा सांसद ने कहा, ‘‘ मैंने पहले भी उनका (गांधी का) पक्ष लिया है और उन लोगों से लड़ा हूं जिन्होंने उनकी छवि धूमिल करने का प्रयास किया। जबकि कुछ मामलों में तो, कुछ कांग्रेस नेताओं ने भी चुप्पी साधे रखी।’’
गौरतलब है कि पुणे में लोकमत मीडिया समूह के एक कार्यक्रम के दौरान दिए एक साक्षात्कार में राउत ने दावा किया था, ‘‘ जब (अंडरवर्ल्ड डॉन) हाजी मस्तान मंत्रालय आए थे, तो पूरा सचिवालय उन्हें देखने नीचे आ गया था। इंदिरा गांधी पायधुनी (दक्षिण मुम्बई) में करीम लाला से मिला करती थीं।’’
उन्होंने यह भी कहा था कि ‘‘ वे (अंडरवर्ल्ड) ही यह तय करते थे कि मुम्बई पुलिस आयुक्त कौन होगा और कौन मंत्रालय में नियुक्त होगा।’’
करीम लाला, मस्तान मिर्जा उर्फ हाजी मस्तान और वरदराजन मुदलियार मुम्बई के बड़े माफिया सरगना थे, जो 1960 से लेकर अस्सी के दशक तक सक्रिय रहे।
राज्यसभा सांसद ने अन्य एक ट्वीट में शिवसेना विधायक आदित्य ठाकरे, कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी और राजीव सातव को टैग करते हुए कहा, ‘‘ मैं लौह महिला के रूप में इंदिरा गांधी की प्रशंसा करने से कभी नहीं कतराया, जो कड़े निर्णय लेती थीं। ताज्जुब की बात यह है कि जो लोग इंदिरा जी का इतिहास नहीं जानते वे ही हल्ला मचा रहे हैं। ’’
वहीं महाराष्ट्र के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री देवेन्द्र फडणवीस ने सवाल उठाया कि क्या (उस समय) यह राज्य में ‘‘राजनीति के अपराधीकरण’’ की शुरुआत थी और क्या कांग्रेस ने मुम्बई में हमला करने वालों का ‘‘ साथ ’’ दिया था।

The NCP legislator, who won the October 21 state polls from Pune’s Baramati seat with a margin of 1.65 lakh votes, shocked his party and family last Saturday after he joined hands with the BJP and became deputy chief minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government.
The NCP subsequently sacked him as its legislature unit leader the same day. However, he continues to be a member of the party.

Opposition members in the Maharashtra Legislative Council today staged a walkout to protest against the BJP-led government’s “indifferent attitude” towards the issue of reservations for Muslims.
The issue was raised by NCP’s Khwaja Beg and Jaywantrao Jadhav, who wanted to know government’s stand on re-issuance of ordinance to extend reservations to Muslims in the educational institutions and government jobs.
Leader of Opposition, Dhananjay Munde, said the High Court has upheld the reservations in educational institutions for Muslims, but the government still allowed the original ordinance in this regard to lapse, and no fresh decision was forthcoming.
“This showed the indifferent attitude of the BJP-Shiv Sena government,” he alleged.
Senior cabinet minister Eknath Khadse (BJP) listed the objections raised against giving reservations to Muslims, and said the matter was pending before the High Court.
The reply failed to satisfy the opposition MLCs who trooped out of the House.

Shiv Sena has called off its alliance with BJP in Kolhapur in Maharashtra and will contest the upcoming municipal corporation polls on its own.
The election to the 81-member Kolhapur civic body is scheduled to be held later this year.
The split in Kolhapur comes in the backdrop of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray recently saying that his party is keen on winning the Assembly polls in Maharashtra on its own and that they had extended support to BJP in 2014 elections to avoid political instability.
BJP in Kolhapur has decided to have a pre-poll alliance with Tara Rani group, a local political outfit, Sena leader in-charge of Kolhapur Arun Dhudwadkar said.
The outfit was set up by Congress MLC Mahadeo Mahadik.
“People voted for Sena-BJP in the Assembly polls to defeat Congress. But, the BJP has decided to join hands with Congress which is unacceptable to the Sena. Therefore, we are calling off our alliance with BJP for the municipal corporation elections,” he said.
Dudhwadkar said Sena has sought an alliance with RPI(A) and Shethkari Sanghtana MP Raju Shetty for the polls.
In Kolhapur district, the Sena has six MLAs, while BJP and NCP have two each. In Kolhapur city, Shiv Sena won the Assembly seat defeating BJP by 25,000 votes, he said.
When contacted, PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil, who is also the Guardian Minister of the district, said BJP decided to join hands with Tara Rani group since it was a 25-year-old political outfit working for local issues in the city. It has been in power in the local body as well.
“If Kolhapur has to be developed as a smart city, BJP needs such local outfits, well-versed in the local issues, to get power in the municipal corporation. Tara Rani has nothing to do with the Congress. Mahadeo Mahadik headed the outfit many years ago. He is now with the Congress, his son is in the NCP while his nephew is in BJP,” Patil said.
