Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Tuesday described NRIs as India’s brand ambassadors and said they were the symbols of the country’s capabilities.
PM was inaugurating the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas convention in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi.
“I consider NRIs India’s brand ambassadors. They are the symbols of our capacities and capabilities,” he told the gathering.
“People of Indian origin are in leadership roles in countries such as Mauritius, Portugal and Ireland,”
Modi also alluded to Rajiv Gandhi’s comment that only 15 paise of Re 1 reaches masses and said the Congress government had done nothing to stop the leakage.
For the first time, the three-day convention is being organised from January 21 to 23 instead of January 9

Non Resident Indians (NRIs) can now join NPS online through eNPS
29 million Indians living in over 200 countries and out of these 25% live in the Gulf countries.
Most of the Indians going to the Gulf and some other countries go for employment and return to India after having worked abroad for a certain period.
NPS can provide a long term solution to their old age income security.
NPS has been available to NRIs for some time through Bank offices and now, to further ease the process of joining, eNPS is being extended to Non-Resident Indian subscribers.
NRIs can now open NPS Accounts online if they have Aadhaar Card or PAN card
Till now, NRIs could open NPS accounts only through paper applications by approaching Bank offices but this has now changed.
Through eNPS, a subscriber will be able to open an NPS account from the comfort of his home.
All he will need is an internet connection and an Aadhaar/ PanCard.
Further, NRIs will be able to open NPS accounts both on Repatriable and on Non Repatriable basis. On a Repatriable basis, an NRI will have to remit the amount through his/her NRE/FCNR/NRO account.
Repatriable and Non-Repatriable schemes will greatly appeal to NRIs who intend to return to India after their employment abroad, in view of their attractive returns, low cost, flexibility and their being regulated by the PFRDA, a Regulator established by the Central Government

NAPA Demands Indian Passports For PIOs+NRIs Stranded In 72 Countries
NAPA’s Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal In a Press Release Said
that there are several thousand Indians who are currently in 72 countries and are running from pillar to post to get their Indian passports to visit their home country. But the government of India is refusing to issue them passports due to their political asylum status in their respective countries. He Added that Their only fault is that they have taken the political asylum due to economic reasons.They are neither criminal or wanted by any law enforcement agency of India. Most of these asylum seekers fall in this category and did not have any association with any terror outfit. It has become very difficult for these Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and their dependents to get visa or Indian Passport for visiting their relatives in India, to attend social and religious functions and manage their properties,” said Chahal. He said that the minister assured them of positive action in the matter
Throwing a Jibe On NDA Govt Chahal said ” Now on the one side senior public servants of India are supporting Indian fugitive to get asylum in foreign countries and for their safe return to India and on the other side our government is refusing to issue passports to about half million innocent Indian citizens who waiting passports”.
