Now Congress MLAs can be appointed as chairpersons of boards and corporations.
Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore has given his assent to the Punjab State Legislature (Prevention of Disqualification) (Amendment) Bill, 2018, paving way for the appointment of Congress MLAs as chairpersons of boards and corporations.
On August 28, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha had passed the bill to add various categories of office of profit to the current list of positions which MLAs can hold without inviting disqualification.
Earlier, the Punjab government had sought to bring amendments through ordinance route, but the governor had refused to give his assent, asking the government to bring the bill to the assembly first.

Provision for bad loans nearly tripled to Rs 7,733.27 crore in the September quarter as against Rs 2,693.78 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.
Shares of PNB were trading 1.01 per cent lower at Rs 73.50 apiece on BSE.
Fraud hit Punjab National Bank Friday posted a staggering loss of Rs 4,532.35 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2018 on rising bad loans.
The state-owned bank had a net profit of Rs 561 crore in the July-September quarter of last fiscal 2016-17.
Its total income during the September quarter of 2018-19 declined to Rs 14,035.88 crore as against Rs 14,205.31 crore in the year-ago period,
The bank’s gross non-performing assets (NPAs) as a proportion of gross advances rose sharply to 17.16 per cent (Rs 81,250.83 crore) at the end of September, from 13.31 per cent (Rs 57,630.11 crore) a year ago.

The Supreme Court Friday quashed an FIR against BJP MP Anurag Thakur, former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and others in a case related to alleged irregularities in granting land on lease for construction of the Dharamshala cricket stadium.
Thakur, who is a BJP MP from Hamirpur and was then the HPCA president, had contended in the apex court that the case was actually a civil dispute
The FIR in the case was registered by the Dharamshala office of the Vigilance Bureau on August 1, 2013, months after the Congress government assumed power in December 2012.

[New Delhi]Top Court Not Convinced By CBI On The Bofors So Dismisses CBI’s Appeal
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed CBI’s appeal against the Delhi High Court verdict discharging all the accused including Hinduja brothers in Rs 64 crore Bofors pay-off case.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it was not convinced with the grounds of the CBI on the delay in filing the appeal.
The apex court, however, said that an appeal against the same HC verdict filed by advocate Ajay Agarwal is pending and the CBI can raise all grounds in it.
The Rs 1,437-crore deal between India and Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors for the supply of 400 units of 155-mm Howitzer guns for the Indian Army was entered into on March 24, 1986.
