Chief Minister K Palaniswami said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that IAF pilot, a native of Tamil Nadu, displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse condition and it would be appropriate he be awarded the highest military honour.
He noted that Varthaman was released by Pakistan “due to the diplomatic initiatives” of the Prime Minister and “intense international pressure”.
Palaniswami recalled that the MiG-21 Bison aircraft piloted by Varthaman had shot down a Pakistan Air Force fighter (F-16) when it tried to violate India’s air space and that he was later taken into custody by Pakistani armed forces.
Varthaman, who was captured on February 27, returned home on March 1 after Pakistan Prime Minster Imran Khan announced he would be released as a “gesture of peace”.
According to the central government, Param Vir Chakra “is awarded for most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi Sunday laid the foundation stone for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Thoppur near here at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore, the first such facility in Tamil Nadu.
He also unveiled super speciality blocks at state-run medical colleges in Madurai, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli through video conference facility.
The proposed 750-bed modern AIIMS here, on its completion, will also offer 100 MBBS seats.
On the occasion, Modi also dedicated 12 passport ‘seva kendras’.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami thanked the Prime Minister for providing the AIIMS facility to Tamil Nadu and urged upon the Centre to set up a medical college at the backward Ramanathapuram district.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said AIIMS here would greatly benefit the people of southern backward districts of Tamil Nadu adding all necessary infrastructure will be developed in the region.

When the Centre announced in its 2014-15 budget that new AIIMS would be set up in various parts of the country, Jayalalithaa had requested one such facility for Tamil Nadu.
Following her plea, the Centre announced in the 2015-16 budget that an AIIMS would be set up in the state.
After a prolonged process, the authorities zeroed in on the Thoppur near here for locating the AIIMS

The Tamil Nadu government Saturday launched a scheme of providing Rs 1,000 to all ration card-holders on the occasion of Pongal festival, being celebrated on January 15.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami launched the scheme by giving away Rs 1,000 each to 10 beneficiaries at a function
He also also gave away Pongal gift hampers to them.
The hampers contain one kg each of rice and sugar, cashew nuts and raisin (both 20 gm) and cardamom, all used to prepare Pongal, a sweet dish, on the occasion of the harvest festival which also marks the birth of the auspicious Tamil month Thai.
Two feet sugarcane is also part of the gift hamper.
The scheme will cover about 2.01 crore families including the Sri Lankan Tamil families residing in camps in Tamil Nadu, an official release said.
The scheme was being implemented at a cost of Rs 258 crore and the gift hampers will be available in ration shops ahead of the Pongal festival,
The scheme is being implemented in line with an announcement made in the Governor’s address to the Tamil Nadu Assembly on January 2.
This scheme will benefit 1.97 crore families and will not be implemented in the bypoll-bound Tiruvarur constituency as the model code of conduct is in force.
Bypoll to Tiruvarur was necessitated following the death of former chief minister M Karunanidhi on August 7 last year.
