The lower house of Mexico’s congress has unanimously approved a law that would prohibit all forms of physical punishment of children by parents, caretakers, teachers or guardians.
Spanking is out, as is a long list of corporal punishments that speak to how deep-rooted the practice is in Mexico. Congress on Thursday said an estimated 63% of children between 1 and 14 had suffered physical punishment.
According to congress, shoving, pinching, biting, hair- or ear-pulling, or forcing minors into uncomfortable positions, will all be outlawed.

Mexico City officials have issued their 6th pollution alert of the year and ordered more cars off the road to reduce emissions.
The alert automatically doubles from 20 % to 40 % the proportion of vehicles not allowed to circulate today.
It was declared yesterday afternoon after ozone levels rose above 150 per cent of acceptable limits.
It also comes with other measures such as restricted activity at some gas stations and factories and a ban on burning solid or liquid materials.
Normally one-fifth of the vehicles in the city and surrounding suburbs must stay at home on a weekday.
The pollution spike is due to seasonal weather patterns and the increasing number of cars in the city.
