A thunderstorm today hit the city, crippling road traffic and affecting electricity supply in some parts of the union territory.
“Because of western disturbances over Pakistan, light to moderate level of thunderstorm has hit the city this afternoon,” UT Chandigarh Meteorological Department Director Surender Paul said today.
The thunderstorm accompanied by high-speed wind and dust hit the city at around 1:30 pm, resulting into felling of trees and traffic snarls in various parts of the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.
Since it was followed by heavy rains, the entire city and its peripheral areas like Mohali and Kharar plunged into darkness, throwing life out of gear.
As per MeT Director “This thunderstorm appears to be light to moderate and is expected to dissipate in about 2 hours. It will move towards some parts of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and then north eastern parts,”

Delhi government today evacuated inmates of an old-age home in south Delhi’s Rangpuri Pahari area as it was flooded due to rains in the city.
Delhi PWD and Health Minister Satyendra Jain said all inmates of the old-age home have been shifted to a nearby community centre.
According to a senior government official, Jain along with Social Welfare Minister Sandeep Kumar and AAP MLA Col.
Devendra Sherawat rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation as soon as they got information about the flooding.Both ministers have been asked to submit a report on the matter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,
After shifting all inmates, Jain tweeted, “People shifted to community centre from Ragpuri pahari old age home which is flooded .I Sandeep & mla are at site,
.The old-age home was recently in the news after a number of deaths were reported at the facility due to dehydration suffered by inmates in last two months.Continuous downpour since early morning left many Delhiites stranded on roads as water logging contributed to heavy traffic snarls.
According to the MeT department, 93.8 mm rainfall was recorded till 8.30 AM.
Though the minimum temperature, which settled four notches below the normal at 23 degrees Celsius, provided some succour to the residents, the humidity recorded at 100 per cent added to their woes.

Southwest Monsoon hit Kerala today marking the start of the rainy season, four days after its normal onset date.
As per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) normal date of monsoon is June 1st
IMD SAID “It has further advanced into entire south Arabian Sea, some more parts of Central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of coastal and southern interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, remanining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of central and northeast Bay of Bengal,”
The IMD added that conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, some more parts of Rayalseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh, and northeast India in next 48 hours.
The MET department had initially predicted that this year the rainy season would make its fall on May 30 with “below normal” Monsoon, but later downgraded its forecast to “deficient” rainfall.
