Smt Sonia Gandhi today rejected government’s offer of Prime Minister’s intervention on Lalitgate and Vyapam issues in Parliament to break the impasse, insisting that those responsible for “gross wrong-doings” should first resign.
Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress President said he is conspicuous by his “deafening silence on the blatant transgressions” by his External Affairs Minister and two Chief Ministers.
“The champion of ‘mann ki baat’ appears to have retreated into a “maun vrat”, she said while lashing out at the Prime Minister and the BJP at the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting here.
The Congress chief said that the party is very clear that there can be “no productive discussion and no meaningful proceedings as long as those responsible for gross wrong-doings remain in office”.
“Our stand is straightforward and clear from day one.
There is a mountain of incontrovertible evidence in public domain for the Prime Minister to require the resignations of the External Affairs Minister and the two chief ministers,” she said ahead of an all-party meeting convened by the government to resolve the two-week long deadlock.
Making a strong pitch for “resign first, debate later” line, she wondered whether the BJP has forgotten that it is the “author of the principle which it has used on at least five different occasions since 1993”.
She preceded the remark by saying that since memories are short, the party needed to remind its political adversaries who “conveniently are suffering from selective amnesia”.
“Today, we have to listen to sermons on parliamentary behaviour from those who not only defended but also advocated disruption as a legitimate tactic when they were in the opposition.
“Yesterday’s agitators in both the Houses have suddenly become today’s champions of debate and discussion,” she said
Sonia, who is also Chairperson of the CPP, declared that the Congress will “persist” making its points “forcefully and emphatically” both in Parliament and outside.
Just two more weeks are left for the monsoon session to conclude. Seeking to end the impasse, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venlaiah Naidu had said the Prime Minister will be prepared to make an intervention during a debate on the Lalit Modi and Vyapam issues.
Sonia today alleged that the impasse was due to the “gross insensitivity of the Modi government to public opinion, for its absolute silence on acts of monumental corruption, its wilful violations of the law and gross misdemeanours on the part of its leading lights”.

Shiv Sena has called off its alliance with BJP in Kolhapur in Maharashtra and will contest the upcoming municipal corporation polls on its own.
The election to the 81-member Kolhapur civic body is scheduled to be held later this year.
The split in Kolhapur comes in the backdrop of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray recently saying that his party is keen on winning the Assembly polls in Maharashtra on its own and that they had extended support to BJP in 2014 elections to avoid political instability.
BJP in Kolhapur has decided to have a pre-poll alliance with Tara Rani group, a local political outfit, Sena leader in-charge of Kolhapur Arun Dhudwadkar said.
The outfit was set up by Congress MLC Mahadeo Mahadik.
“People voted for Sena-BJP in the Assembly polls to defeat Congress. But, the BJP has decided to join hands with Congress which is unacceptable to the Sena. Therefore, we are calling off our alliance with BJP for the municipal corporation elections,” he said.
Dudhwadkar said Sena has sought an alliance with RPI(A) and Shethkari Sanghtana MP Raju Shetty for the polls.
In Kolhapur district, the Sena has six MLAs, while BJP and NCP have two each. In Kolhapur city, Shiv Sena won the Assembly seat defeating BJP by 25,000 votes, he said.
When contacted, PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil, who is also the Guardian Minister of the district, said BJP decided to join hands with Tara Rani group since it was a 25-year-old political outfit working for local issues in the city. It has been in power in the local body as well.
“If Kolhapur has to be developed as a smart city, BJP needs such local outfits, well-versed in the local issues, to get power in the municipal corporation. Tara Rani has nothing to do with the Congress. Mahadeo Mahadik headed the outfit many years ago. He is now with the Congress, his son is in the NCP while his nephew is in BJP,” Patil said.

In his condolence message, the Chief Minister described late Farooqi?as a great Islamic scholar who was an embodiment of spirituality.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Sunday decided to lift the more than three-year-old entry ban on Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan but decided not to challenge the BCCI-imposed life ban on tainted player Ankeet Chavan despite a Delhi Court dropping criminal charges against him.
Both the decisions were taken at a MCA meeting here with vice-president Ashish Shelar being the proposer.
“Today, in the MCA meeting, it was decided that the ban imposed on IPL’s Kolkata franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan should be lifted. With the prior approval of our President Sharad Pawar, it was proposed by me that the ban on him be lifted and the managing committee approved it unanimously. Therefore, the ban on his entry in the Wankhede Stadium has been revoked,” Shelar told reporters after the meeting.
The Bollywood superstar was banned for five years from entering MCA premises, including the Wankhede Stadium, by the Association’s Managing Committee, headed by the late Vilasrao Deshmukh, on May 18, 2012 after he was involved in an altercation with the security staff and officials of the cricket body following Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory over Mumbai Indians two nights earlier.
Khan, however, denied he had misbehaved and maintained that he reacted only after children, including his kids, were “manhandled” by the security staff at the stadium.
“Action had been taken against him when required and we felt it was not good to take it any further. The whole managing committee consented on it. We felt it would not look good to bar somebody like this,” Shelar said.
MCA sources said that Khan had called up Pawar to request that the ban be revoked.
In other decisions, the MCA decided not to challenge the ban on Chavan, who was cleared of criminal charges by a Delhi court last month.
Shelar said the MCA would not stand by a player found guilty under the BCCI’s anti-corruption code.
“Ankeet Chavan, who has been cleared of MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) charges, requested us to convince BCCI to lift the ban on him. But the BCCI has already sent a mail to MCA clearing the factual position on this issue,” Shelar said.
“The MCA has therefore decided that it would not challenge BCCI’s action against Ankeet which was taken as per the disciplinary committee code and the anti-corruption code.
So, we have rejected his request. We unanimously decided that the action against such a player should continue because the court ruling is only on MCOCA.
