Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today termed the results of Assembly elections in five states as “the last rites of the Congress as a political party”.
“The final rituals of the last rites would be performed next year when Punjab goes to polls,” the SAD leader said in a statement here.
Badal said people of the country are favouring parties which have a strong federal ideology. That is why in both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, regional parties have performed strongly and the trend is certain to continue in Punjab,”
The Chief Minister said these results have also “exploded the myth” of incumbency necessarily being a negative factor for parties in the government.

Burning In Jat Quota Stir Haryana’s Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said his government has returned the cheque for Rs 191.75 crore “in original” which Punjab had sent yesterday for Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
The Punjab Cabinet had on Tuesday decided to dispatch a cheque for Rs 191.75 crore back to Haryana which had sent it towards construction of the SYL canal. The cheque was dispatched yesterday.
The Haryana government has also moved an application in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on Punjab government’s recent move on SYL canal issue.
In a statement in the Haryana Assembly, Khattar said, “The bill concerning SYL canal has not yet been signed by the Governor.”
Punjab Assembly had on Monday passed the Punjab Satluj Yamuna Link Canal Land (Transfer of Proprietary Rights) Bill, 2016, which aims to de-notify the land acquired for construction of SYL canal, a lingering dispute between the two neighbouring states.
Khattar said he has also spoken to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and expressed his displeasure over Punjab Government’s move on the SYL canal.
Noting that Haryana government has shown strong resentment over Punjab’s unconstitutional move on SYL canal issue, Khattar said he has returned the cheque to Punjab government.
The Haryana Chief Minister said since Punjab government’s move on SYL canal is unconstitutional, he has requested Punjab Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki not to give assent to the bill.

Cutting across party lines, all Punjab MLAs accompanied Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today met Governor Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki and requested him to grant ascent to the new Bill on Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal passed by the Assembly for de-notification of land acquired for the canal.
As per sources ,The Governor listened to Badal and other leaders but did not make any commitment on ascent to the Bill,
Apart from Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, almost all the legislators of SAD, Congress, including Leader of Opposition in state assembly Charanjit Singh Channi, BJP and independents accompanied Badal to the Raj Bhawan.
The CM had led the delegation to the Governor seeking approval of the Bill, unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly on Monday.
The festering row over sharing of the Ravi-Beas waters escalated yesterday with Punjab Assembly passing the bill against construction of contentious SYL canal, sparking an immediate adoption of a resolution by Haryana Assembly condemning the other state’s move as “unconstitutional”

today filed their nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha membership from Punjab.
Dhindsa and Gujral (the son of former Prime Minister I K Gujral), both senior leaders of SAD, filed their nomination papers
.The term of five members of Rajya Sabha elected from Punjab will expire in April.
The polling for electing five new RS members will be held on March 21.
The MPs whose term is expiring are
Ashwani Kumar (Cong),
Avinash Rai Khanna (BJP),
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (Akali Dal),
Manohar Singh Gill (Cong) and
Naresh Gujral (Akali Dal).

The last date of filing nominations is March 11. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 12 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 14.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today claimed that there are certain “shortcomings” in the Centre’s new crop insurance scheme and said an amendment was needed in order to make it “farmer friendly”.
He said “Declaring village as a unit for crop insurance would hardly fulfil the basic spirit behind introducing the scheme.
Rather it should ensure that plot was considered as a unit to compensate the farmers for their loss,”
Badal also claimed that insuring the crop only if whole village pays its premium, was also an “impractical assumption”.

As per sources ,The officers have been asked to give details of enquiries of more than six months on a prescribed performa to their respective departmental representative (not less than under secretary rank)

Punjab government today gave green signal to initiate work on three prestigious memorials across the state at a cost of nearly Rs 25 crore.
Presiding over a high level meeting , Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal gave nod for starting work on Bhai Mardana Memorial at Ferozepur, Shri Guru Virjanand Samarak at Kartarpur near Jalandhar and Baba Moti Ram Mehra Memorial at Fatehgarh Sahib.
These memorials would act as lighthouses to acquaint our coming generations about the rich cultural heritage of the state,Badal said.
The work on these projects should be initiated at the earliest to ensure its timely completion, he said.
The Chief Minister was apprised in the meeting that upcoming Bhai Mardana Memorial at Ferozepur would be a “magnificent” building with “rare” architecture, an official release said.
As a tribute to Bhai Mardana, a contemporary of first Guru of Sikhs Sri Guru Nanak Dev, this memorial to be constructed over 0.72 acres of land would have a state-of-the -art gallery with pictures depicting the life history of Bhai Mardana besides a music academy to train the budding students in classical Gurbani, it said.
Likewise, Shri Guru Virjanand Samarak, being constructed at Kartarpur- the birth place of this celebrated teacher of Arya Samaj founder Swami Dayanand Saraswati – would emerge as a centre of “research in Arya Samaj” movement, it said.
This memorial spread over 0.93 acres would also house a gallery exhibiting the life, works and philosophy of the renowned saint and his disciple Swami Dayanand Saraswati, it said.
Similarly, Baba Moti Ram Mehra Memorial at Fatehgarh Sahib would be equipped with flat relief sculptures associated with life of Baba Moti Ram Mehra, who served milk to younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri in ‘Thanda Burj’ before the martyrdom of ‘chotta sahibzadas’ at Sirhind.
The land of this memorial would also have picturesque landscaping so as to give a splendid look to the memorial, the release said.

He said”I wish to tell this to central government, including Rajnath Singh (Union Minister) today we are being shown as communal. Portrayed as terrorists. No religion is more secular than Sikhism,”.
Referring to the 1984 Operation Bluestar and people jailed in Jodhpur jail, he said that “we want to request that all those convicts who are in jails for many years should be released.”
Referring to shifting of life convict Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar from Tihar Jail in Delhi to Amritsar recently, he said that “I thank Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that on humanitarian grounds he has taken initiative for release of Sikh convicts”.
