Paddy growers claim, they are “compelled” to do so in the absence of any financial support from the government for farm waste management.
The situation is likely to aggravate this year as the window period for managing the paddy crop residue has got shortened by at least 10 days because of rains last month that delayed paddy harvesting and some farmers said they will resort to stubble burning over taking the farm mechanization route.

This, the MLA from Kaithal claimed, was due to fallacious policies of the BJP governments at the state and the Centre.
Notably, the Indian Stamp (Haryana Amendment) Bill, 2018 was passed by the state Assembly recently to revise the rates of stamp duty of small denominations fixed since 1967.
Congress Spokesperson Surjewala said the Khattar government has imposed a massive 267 per cent increase in partnership deed stamp duty while increasing it from Rs 3.75 to Rs 1,000 and 889 per cent increase in stamp duty for agreement deeds by increasing it from Rs 2.25 to Rs 2,000.
“Similarly, the stamp duty for power of attorney has been increased by 333 per cent by increasing this duty from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000. For power of attorney, a person will now have to shell out Rs 100 instead of Rs 37.50,”

BJP Led Haryana government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to stall a one-day strike by bus workers on September 5,
The same law is being invoked to end a continuing strike by a section of government health workers.
Haryana Roadways workers had given the strike call to protest against the government’s move to allow private buses to run within and from the state.
During the past year, the Haryana Roadways workers have gone on strike on a few occasions in support of different demands.
The multi-purpose health workers are demanding the status of a technical cadre and also want an anomalies in pay between men and women employees removed.

The Haryana government has decided to increase salary of guest teachers by nearly 25 per cent, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said today.
Besides, women guest teachers have been given five additional days of casual leave
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had accorded approval to this proposal.
“The monthly salary of PGT or lecturer (guest teachers) has been increased to Rs 36,000 from Rs 29,715, whereas the salary of TGT and C and V guest teachers has been increased to Rs 30,000 from Rs 24,001, and the salary of JBT and C and V guest teachers has been increased to Rs 26,000 from Rs 21,715,”
The women guest teachers used to get 15 days casual leave in a year, which has been increased to 20 days.

Government today moved the Supreme Court seeking early hearing in the matter related to its row with Punjab over the Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.
The bench asked Haryana’s counsel to approach the apex court registry for listing of the matter before an appropriate bench.
The apex court had earlier granted the Centre time to explore the possibility of an amicable solution to the SYL canal row between Punjab and Haryana.
On July 11, the apex court said it was obligatory for Punjab and Haryana to respect and execute its orders on the SYL canal issue.
The controversial 1981 water-sharing agreement came into being after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966
In 2004, the Congress government in the state came out with the Punjab Termination of Agreement Act with the intention to terminate the 1981 agreement and all other pacts relating to sharing waters of the Ravi and Beas rivers.
The apex court had first decreed Haryana’s suit in 2002 asking Punjab to honour its commitments with regard to water sharing in the case.
Punjab had challenged the verdict by filing an original suit that was rejected in 2004 by the Supreme Court which asked the Centre to take over the remaining infrastructure work of the SYL canal project.

Khattar govt in Haryana has directed sportspersons employed with it to deposit one-third of their earnings from commercial and professional commitments to the state sports council, drawing sharp criticism from the athletes.
“One-third of the income earned by the sportsperson from professional sports or commercial endorsements will be deposited with the Haryana State Sports Council. The money shall be used for the development of sports in the State,” said the notification issued by Principal Secretary (Sports and Youth Department), Ashok Khemka.
Khemka had hit the headlines during his stint as head of land registration department by alleging irregularities in land deals involving Robert Vadra a few years ago.
The Haryana government had earlier courted controversy when it had decided to reduce the prize money for those Commonwealth Games medal winners from the state who were employed with other departments or states.
The felicitation function planned for the prize money distribution on April 26 had to be eventually cancelled indefinitely when the athletes threatened to boycott it.

A man, who hurled ink at Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a public event here, was remanded to one-day police custody by a local court today.
Praveen Sawant, a resident of Jakhod Khera village in Hisar district, was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Nidhi Gupta.
The incident had created a commotion even as it revealed chinks in the politician’s security.
Security personnel accompanying the chief minister grappled with Sawant as he shouted slogans and then handed him over to the local police.

Manohar Lal Khattar government in Haryana has banned the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film ‘Padmaavat’ in the state,
Health Minister Anil Vij tweeted.
“Film Padmavati/Padmavat banned in Haryana”
Vij had earlier said that he would not allow screening of the movie in the state. He had alleged that Bhansali had wrongly presented historical facts in the movie to “defame” the image of ‘Rani Padmavati’ and this had hurt the sentiments of lakhs of people.
“Rani Padmavati is the symbol of Indian women’ pride. The character assassination of Padmavati will not be tolerated at any level,”
The film, mired in controversy over its plot line, had been given a go-ahead by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has asked the makers to change the title from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’ and suggested some other modifications.
The film is set for release on January 25
