Punjab Information and Public Relations Department has secured third prize for the Punjab tableau at the national Republic Day celebrations.
The state’s tableau,was highlighting the historic Jallianwala Bagh massacre, CM Capt Amarinder Singh termed the tableau as a humble tribute to the centenary commemoration of Jallainawala massacre in April 2019, and said the prize would go a long way in imbibing the spirit of nationalism and patriotism amongst the younger generation.
The award was conferred by Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at New Delhi and was received by Secretary Information & Public Relations Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, who was accompanied by Director Anindita Mitra. Notably, the department had also been awarded third position in 1967 and in 1982.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has favoured the setting up of open jails for the female prisoners in the state
CM has sought a proposal from the Department of Prisons.
The chief minister had on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed waiting hall for the families of the inmates during his visit to the Patiala Central Jail.
He was informed by the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Rohit Chaudhary that an open jail for male inmates already existed in Nabha and there was a proposal to set up more such jails in Bathinda, SBS Nagar and Kapurthala.
According to the official, the waiting hall would be beneficial for the families of inmates coming from distant places, who earlier had to wait in the open or makeshift sheds.
The halls are constructed in Central Jail Patiala, Ludhiana and Kapurthala, and work is in progress in Central Jail Ferozpur, Hoshiarpur, New Jail Nabha and Distrcit Jail Sangrur, it added.
Chaudhary also told the chief minister that the government had already approved a fund of Rs 60 crores to purchase security equipment, weapons, building infrastructure and modernisation of prisons, and also for purchase of vehicles for the Prison Department to further strengthen the existing infrastructure in the state jails.
Further, all the prisons were declared polythene free and the carry bags used in canteens will be made from waste newspapers, he added.
On the occasion, Singh also launched ‘e-purse system’ to facilitate prisoners to buy items of daily needs inside the jail.
The system has also been introduced in 15 prisons across the state, where all the financial transactions would be conducted through computer software with the help of smart cards.
The chief minister also inaugurated a solar power plant installed in the local Central Jail, in order to make the jail eco-friendly.
Chaudhary also informed Singh that such solar plants were also being set up in 19 prisons across the state.
Later, Singh also visited the high-security zone of Central Jail Patiala, where hardcore criminals were lodged, and reviewed the security.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday protested against Pakistan’s proposal to allow only Sikh pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, pointing out that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a universal Guru, revered by followers of all religions, especially Hindus.
The Chief Minister has urged the Indian government to take up the issue with Islamabad when the latter sends its draft agreement for regulating entry into its territory through the Kartarpur Corridor.
There was for years the tradition of Hindu families converting their eldest sons to Sikhism, the Chief Minister further noted, adding that the influence of Sikhism in India was so strong that to exclude members of other religions was not something that Pakistan

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has sought waiver of passport condition for pilgrims to cross the Kartarpur Corridor to enable “khulle darshan deedar” of Sri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara on the 550th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Sri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara.
Captain Amarinder Singh has also asked the Modi Government to quickly finalize the alignment of the road access and attendant government infrastructure to be built around the Corridor so that the process of acquisition may be commenced without any further delay to ensure early operatlionalisation of the historic Corridor.
Captain Amarinder has, in his letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh suggested that any other valid government document such as the Aadhar card, may be used in place of Passport for identification to enable maximum pilgrims to visit the sacred Gurdwara Sahib.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday ruled out the need for an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the state but said the decision on a coalition with the party would be taken by the Congress high command.
He was responding to questions from media persons during an informal chat after meeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi to discuss a host of state government and party related issues, particularly in view of the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
On the issue of the Kartarpur Corridor, Captain Amarinder Singh said while Pakistan had already started work on the construction of the road on their side, development work had yet to start in the Indian Punjab, as the state government had not received any funds so far from the Centre for acquiring land for building the infrastructure.
The Chief Minister trashed as completely incorrect the allegations levelled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the loan waiver scheme for farmers in Punjab. His government had already waived off crop loans worth Rs 3,417 crores of 4,14,275 farmers in just one year. His government was committed to covering all the 10.25 lakh small and marginal farmers He said loans of the remaining about 3 lakh of the 10.25 lakh farmers would be waived off shortly.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh on Saturday has written to Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari seeking early approval of the proposed Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway project.
The Expressway has been proposed as a greenfield project by the Government of India to connect the national capital with the important religious cities of Amritsar (in Punjab) and Katra (in Jammu & Kashmir).
The Chief Minister urged the Government of India to expeditiously approve the project as it would lead to improved connectivity and foster greater socio-economic development of the region, said the spokesperson.

Punjab cabinet ministe Bajwa said “If he[Sidhu] does not consider Capt Amarinder as his captain then he should resign on moral grounds from the cabinet and do whatever work is assigned to him by Rahul Gandhi,”Bajwa, who is the state’s rural development and panchayat minister, said Amarinder Singh is our captain in Punjab, he is our leader .
The minister demanded that Sidhu should seek an apology from the chief minister. “He will have to accept Captain sahib as his leader in Punjab,” Bajwa said.
Sidhu’s Jibe at Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, even as the cricketer-turned-politician backtracked on his claim that Congress president Rahul Gandhi had sent him to Pakistan for the Kartarpur corridor event,has created turmoil in Punjab Congress.
Bajwa said Rahul Gandhi remained everyone’s captain , but he disapproved of Sidhu’s remarks about the chief minister.
“Rahul Gandhi is my captain. It is he who sent me to Pakistan. Rahul Gandhi is the captain of the captain (Amarinder Singh) also,”
But Sidhu claimed tens of thousands of people wanted to take pictures with him in Kartarpur and he didn’t know Chawla.
