Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition and with today’s announcement, selection of 100 cities has been completed under the Smart Cities Mission. Previously,
20 cities were selected in January 2016,
13 cities in May 2016,
27 cities in September 2016,
30 cities in June 2017 and
9 cities in January 2018.

Breaking his silence on the party’s defeat in three northeast states, Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said he respected the mandate of people in the region and was committed to winning back their trust.
Results for assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland were declared on Saturday.
The Congress lost Meghalaya and failed to score a single seat in Tripura and Nagaland.
The party won 21 seats in Meghalaya, where it was in power, and could not garner the support of regional outfits to cobble together a coalition government.
Top party leaders Ahmed Patel and Kamal Nath rushed to Shillong to talk to regional parties but to no avail.
Gandhi had announced on Thursday that he would visit his 93-year-old grandmother in Italy over the Holi weekend.
Top party leaders had refrained from making any comment on the results

Baptist World Alliance president Paul Msiza, was scheduled to attend a church programme in Meghalaya,
The Indian consulate at Johannesburg in South Africa informed the BWA president last night that his visa to visit Meghalaya for attending a programme had been rejected, Rev J R Sangma, general secretary of the Garo Baptist Convention told PTI.
The Garo Baptist Convention, a Christian denomination in Meghalaya, has over 2.6 lakh baptised adults in 2013, according to the Church census.
Baptist leaders are in touch with Union Tourism Minister K J Alphons seeking his intervention in the matter.
The BWA is a worldwide alliance of Baptist churches and organizations, formed during the first Baptist World Congress in 1905.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemned the BJP government at the Centre over the rejection of the Christian missionary’s visa.
“This matter cannot be seen in isolation as that of just a visa denial. It very well exposes the mind-set of the present dispensation, the BJP and their masters in Nagpur,” Congress MP Vincent H Pala told reporters.

[New Delhi]Smiling[Former]L S Speaker P A Sangma died :Heart Attack Sangma was a nine-time member of Lok Sabha and the Speaker in the 11th Lok Sabha.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma died of a heart attack today.
He was 68.
Parliament sources said the end came this morning after he suffered a heart attack.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced the news of his death in the House, which was adjourned for the day.
While expressing deep grief over Sangma’s passing away, Mahajan said he knew how to run the House with a smile and “I learnt this from him.”
She said
“A man of masses, Sangma strove relentlessly for the amelioration of the marginalised sections,”
Condoling the death of Sangma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “a self-made leader whose contribution towards the development of the North East is monumental/Saddened by his demise.”
Sangma’s tenure as Lok Sabha Speaker “is unforgettable. His down-to-earth personality and affable nature endeared him to many,” he said, adding “Sangmaji was deeply influenced by Netaji Bose.”
He was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and Leader of Opposition in the assembly from 1990 to 1991.
Born on September 1, 1947 in village Chapahati in the picturesque West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya, Sangma grew up in the small tribal village and struggled hard to rise in life.
A Congressman who was one of the founding members of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was expelled from it in July 2012 when he refused to accept his party’s decision to quit the race for India’s President. In January 2013, he had formed the National People’s Party.

Meghalaya Based National People’s Party’s Political Recognition Is Suspended

[New Delhi] Meghalaya Based National People’s Party’s Political Is Recognition Suspended. it is the first case that recognition of a political party has been suspended by the Election Commission under Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order 1968, for its failure to follow the Lawful directions of the Commission.
Election Commission of India has suspended the recognition of the National People’s Party, a recognized state party in Meghalaya due to its failure in filing the election expenditure statement of the party.
In pursuance of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgement in the case of Common Cause Vs Union of India and others (AIR-1996 SC 3081), the ECI had earlier issued instructions to all political parties, to file their election expenditure statement within 75 days of assembly general elections and 90 days of Lok Sabha general elections. The general election to Lok Sabha, 2014 and elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim, 2014 was completed on 28th May, 2014 and as per the Commission’s instructions, the political parties were required to submit their election expenditure statements in connection with the above elections by 26th August, 2014.
The Commission had issued two reminders to the National People’s Party to submit the required statement for Lok Sabha election 2014 after the due date had long expired, on 26th August 2014.
Finally, the Election Commission issued a notice on 17th March 2015 to the party to showcause as to why action should not be taken under para 16A of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment ) Order 1968 for failure to follow the lawful directions and instructions of the Commission;
On receipt of the Notice, the National People’s Party had requested time to submit its expenditure statement by 15th April 2015 and again for time up to by 15 May 2015 but failed to honor the deadline and did not file the expenditure statement of the party.

2. Dr. Krishan Kant Paul, Governor of Meghalaya is transferred and appointed as Governor of Uttarakhand for the remainder of his term. Dr. Krishan Kant Paul will continue to hold the additional charge of the office of the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties, till further orders.
3. Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Governor of West Bengal, will discharge the functions of the Governor of Meghalaya, in addition to his own duties, till further orders.
