The BJP on Friday swept the mayoral polls of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation with its candidate Raj Bala Malik being elected as the new city mayor.
Malik, an advocate, trounced Congress nominee Gurbax Rawat, She was polled 22 votes while Rawat got five votes
Malik was the city mayor in 2012 and at that time she was with the Congress.
She switched over to the BJP in 2016.
Ravi Kant Sharma defeated Congress candidate Sheela Phool Singh in the election for the post of the senior deputy Mayor.
Saffron party’s Jagtar Singh bagged the post of the deputy mayor after defeating Congress’ Ravinder Gujral.
The mayor’s post this year was reserved for a woman candidate.
A mayor has a one-year term in Chandigarh.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has the majority in the 27-member of the MC House with 20 councillors while the Congress has five councillors.
The BJP’s ally Shiromani Akali Dal also has one councillor.
Local MP Kirron Kher is an ex-officio member of the House.
In order to be elected as a mayor, a nominee needs 14 votes.

The Puducherry unit of the Bharathiya Janata party (BJP) presented a memorandum to the territorial Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Tuesday in protest against the ruling Congress government to introduce casinos here.
A delegation of the party unit led by V Saminathan, an MLA, submitted the memorandum to Bedi at Raj Niwas, her official residence.
Later, a statement from her office said the memorandum referred to the possibility of the cultural base of Puducherry getting affected if casinos were permitted and hence approval for them must not be given.
In the statement, Bedi assured the BJP delegation that she would go through the petition and initiate appropriate action.
On Saturday, Bedi had rejected the government’s proposal to open casinos, lotteries and breweries to earn more revenue, saying they are considered against the spiritual ethos and social fabric of Puducherry.

Delhi’s air pollution skyrocketed after Diwali. A layer of haze enveloped the national capital as the city’s air quality plummeted to the “severe” category for the first time this season.
The overall air quality index (AQI) stood at 463 at 11.30 am, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).
The AQI at Pusa, Lodhi Road, Airport Terminal T3, Noida, Mathura Road, Ayanagar, IIT Delhi, Dhirpur, and Chandni Chowk was 480, 436, 460, 668, 413, 477, 483, 553 and 466, respectively. Ruling AAP on Monday said that the saffron party has “a habit of” opposing everything that the Kejriwal government does.
But Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta hit back, saying the Aam Aadmi Party is making these claims to “distract” people from its failures to curb air pollution to a manageable level.
Addressing a press conference, senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said BJP leaders should think about their families before bursting crackers.
He was apparently referring to Delhi unit BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, who posted a video on Twitter where he could be seen lighting earthen lamps and bursting firecrackers with people in unauthorised colonies.
Gupta said ,AAP is making such claims because its government has not done any ground work in Delhi. “Controlling pollution needs work all through the year. The AAP has not done that and now to distract people from its own failures it is making such comments.”

The SAD had contested the 2019 Haryana Assembly polls in alliance with Indian National Lok Dal (#INLD), although Badal’s party was is in alliance with BJP in Punjab and a partner of NDA at the Centre.
SAD contested three seats and failed to open its account while its ally INLD could retain the Ellenabad seat from where Abhay Singh Chautala won.

Badal also said the former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, the great-grandfather of Dushyant Chautala, was his “closest friend and sympathiser”.
“Today I am happy that Devi Lal’s grandson (Dushyant) became the deputy chief minister of Haryana,” he said.

Ammar Rizvi asserted that he will work to dispel “misunderstanding and confusion” among minorities about the saffron party.
Rizvi, a veteran of Uttar Pradesh politics, who was the leader of opposition in the legislative council and a minister for five times in Congress governments, said he had been impressed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s working for a long time.
Rizvi was inducted into the BJP by its national general secretary Arun Singh.
He had left the Congress after he did not get its ticket to contest the recent Lok Sabha election and supported senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh who was contesting from Lucknow.
