Punjab reported the sharpest single-day spike of 1,946 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, pushing the COVID-19 tally to 63,473 in the state.
The previous record of new cases reported in a day was 1,746 on August 27.
Fifty-four more COVID-19 deaths took the toll to 1,862 in the state, according to a government medical bulletin.
Thirteen deaths were reported from Ludhiana, eight from Patiala, six from Kapurthala, five from Amritsar, three each from Faridkot, Moga, Jalandhar and Bathinda, two from Pathankot, Muktsar and Hoshiarpur and one each from Barnala, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran, it said.
Among places which reported new cases included Jalandhar (261), Pathankot (205), Gurdaspur (186), Bathinda (168), Ludhiana (161), Mohali (154), Patiala (150), Hoshiarpur (135), Amritsar (133) and Faridkot (88).
Punjab has been seeing a surge in the number of coronavirus cases and adding over 1,000 coronavirus cases every day for a few days.
There are 16,156 active Covid-19 cases in the state, as of now, according to the bulletin.
Seventy one critical patients are on ventilator support while 571 are on oxygen support
A total of 11,93,260 samples have been collected for testing so far in the state

Punjab on Wednesday reported a record 29 deaths due to COVID-19 pushing the toll to 491, while 894 people tested for the infection taking the case tally to 19,856.
Nine fatalities were reported from Ludhiana,
five from Patiala,
four from Jalandhar,
three from Gurdaspur,
two from Sangrur and
one each from Amritsar, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Mansa, Kapurthala and Rupnagar.
Districts which reported new cases included
Ludhiana (303),
Patiala (185),
Jalandhar (101),
Amritsar (53),
Barnala (33),
Bathinda (29) and
Mohali (27).
A total of 452 coronavirus patients were discharged after recovering from the infection. So far 12,943 people have been cured of the infection.
There are 6,422 active COVID-19 cases in the state, as of now
Twenty-two patients are critical and are on ventilator support while 148 are on oxygen support
A total of 6,22,127 samples have been taken for testing so far in the state, it said.

As per Officials 54-year-old resident of Pathankot died due to the disease at a civil hospital
Ludhiana reported nine fresh cases followed by
Rupnagar (8),
Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar (4 each),
Amritsar (3) and
Moga and Barnala (1 each)
On Sunday, 20 patients were discharged from hospitals after they recovered from the infection, taking the total number of cured persons to 1,987, it said, adding that 231 patients are undergoing treatment.

The novel coronavirus deaths rose to 27 in Punjab on Wednesday with two more fatalities, while the number of cases climbed by 75 to 1,526, the Health Department said.
A 29-year-old man from Jalandhar died of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) at the PGIMER in Chandigarh on Tuesday, while a 39 year-old man died in Patiala on Tuesday, according to a medical bulletin.
The two deaths take the total fatalities in the state due to the pandemic to 27. A patient is critical and is on ventilator support
Seventy-five people, including 35 Nanded pilgrims, tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases to 1,526. There are 1,364 active cases, according to the bulletin.
A total of 135 COVID-19 patients have been been discharged in the state so far with the recovery of two more people from Patiala and Jalandhar
A total of 32,060 samples have been taken so far in the state, out of which 24,303 are negative and reports of 6,231 are still awaited.
A health official said the number of pilgrims from Nanded, Maharashtra, testing positive for the pathogen reached 1,004, which is 66 per cent of the total coronavirus cases in the state.
Amritsar continued to top the COVID-19 tally in the state with 230 cases, followed by 135 in Jalandhar, 124 in Ludhiana and 95 in Mohali districts.

Some members of the Muslim community on Wednesday launched an indefinite sit-in against the amended citizenship law and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC ) here.
The indefinite dharna began at Dana Mandi here near Jalandhar bypass on the lines of the ongoing Shaheen Bagh protest in Delhi.
“This is another Shaheen Bagh in Ludhiana. Our protest will continue until the Modi government withdraws this Act (CAA),” said Maulana Abul-Ur-Rehman Sani, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid.
Shaheen Bagh in Delhi has become the epicentre of the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) as women with young children have been staging a sin-in there for nearly two months.
The sit-in by members of the community was to be organised near the statue of B R Ambedkar but was shifted to Dana Mandi here.

1,54,423 voters (1.12 per cent of total votes polled) pressed the NOTA option,
Among 13 Lok Sabha seats, it was Faridkot constituency where maximum number of voters rejected the candidates. A total of 19,246 voters in Faridkot went for NOTA, as per EC data available.
In Anandpur Sahib, 17,135 voters opted for NOTA option, while in Ferozepur the figure was 14,891.
On almost all the constituencies in Punjab, NOTA occupied the fifth spot, as per data available.
A total of 13,323 voters opted for NOTA in Bathinda,
followed by 13,045 in Fatehgarh Sahib,
12,868 in Hoshiarpur,
12,324 in Jalandhar,
11,110 in Patiala,
10,538 in Ludhiana,
9,560 in Gurdaspur,
8,763 in Amritsar,
6,490 in Sangrur and
5,130 in Khadoor Sahib.
Interestingly, the percentage of NOTA votes was more than the vote percentage of some political parties like CPI and CPM in the state, the EC said.

पंजाब से शिरोमणि अकाली दल के प्रमुख सुखबीर सिंह बादल,उनकी पत्नी श्रीमती हरसिमरत कौर बादल, बॉलीवुड अभिनेता सनी देओल, पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री मनीष तिवारी एवं परणीत कौर और रवनीत सिंह बिट्टू उन प्रमुख चेहरों में हैं जिन्हें जीत मिली है।
केंद्रीय मंत्री एवं भाजपा उम्मीदवार हरदीप सिंह पुरी, पंजाब कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष सुनील जाखड़ और अकाली दल के उम्मीदवार प्रेम सिंह चंदूमाजरा हारने वाले प्रमुख चेहरे हैं।
भाजपा ने होशियारपुर और गुरदासपुर सीटें जीती, लेकिन एक बार फिर अमृतसर सीट नहीं जीत सकी।
पंजाब में ‘आप’ को पिछले आम चुनावों में चार सीटें मिली थीं, लेकिन इस बार उसे सिर्फ एक सीट मिल सकी है। संगरूर सीट पर ‘आप’ उम्मीदवार भगवंत मान जीते हैं।

Launching the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee’s Jan Sampark Abhiyan ,CM assured Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of full support by the state party cadre to realise Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s dream of an inclusive India.
The Punjab chief minister also asserted that the Congress president will be the the next prime minister of the country.
Priyanka’s entry marked the fulfilment of a long-pending demand of the Congress workers and all party members, across cadre, a party release quoting Amarinder Singh said.
Formally launching the ‘Mission 13’ campaign, he exhorted the PPCC workers to go all out to expose the false propaganda being spread by the SAD-BJP combine and to take the state government’s achievements to the people.
